After our 17 hour luxury train journey (food was included in the journey, every two hours they kept bringing us food) we arrived in Kolkata (Calcutta) at a decent time. We managed to find our way out of the train station but didn't have a clue where to go. We spent a while trying to find a taxi, we could see hundreds queuing in traffic but they were all full. We managed to jump in one, he started driving off as pete was half in, luckily he stopped when pete shouted. We started queuing in the traffic and noticed lots of smoke coming from the dashboard. We were a little worried but as he started driving it soon cleared. After about half hour we noticed he didn't have a clue where he was going. He tried to drop us off on a random street but we said we werent getting out until we found the hotel. He stopped and asked about 5 different people and in the end we found it. When pete paid he asked for more money as it took longer, to which pete explained he wasn't paying any more. The driver wasn't happy but pete got rid of him.
We walked in to our hotel which we had booked on the Internet. It was a building site. We had to climb the stairs avoiding ladders and builders to check in. Luckily our room was on the ground floor so we didn't have to tackle this obstacle course too often.
The manager came to our room with one of the builders to get the TV working. They took it off the wall to rewired the aerial. This is when we saw there wasn't a plug, the wires were just jammed in to the socket with some selotape over them. Oh well they got it working.
We took a long walk in to the centre and had a look around. We found a very nice restaurant where we had some great Chinese food. We then headed back for an early night. Whilst in Kolkata we also visited the Victoria memorial which was built when Queen Victoria died. We visited the museum which had thousands of fossils, we haven't got a clue what any of them were though. The best part was all of the stuffed animals; tigers, lions, elephants. They had all sorts, they even had human embryos in jars but we wernt sure if they were real.
On sunday we walked to Mother Theresa's house. Unfortunately it was closed so we couldn't go inside. We then walked to the cemetry. It was an amazingly calm place compared to busy streets outside. Instead of headstones everyone had a monument above their grave and every one was British. No one has been buried there since the mid 1800's so it's a bit like stepping back in time. As we were walking towards the exit we noticed a couple of tent like structures where people actually live inside the walled in grave yard.
As it was our last night in india we thought we should head out for a couple of drinks. We found a nice rooftop bar which we had seen in our book. In the lift we bumped in to a couple from New Zealand. They joined us for a drink and were both very interesting. They have houses all over the world, they live in Fes for 6 months a year then Australia and seem to travel all the time, they are also both authors so we will be looking out for they're books.
After a few beers we went back to one of our favourite cafes for dinner; The food was great.
Kolkata was a prety crazy place but charmed us a lot more than Delhi did.
