(This blog entry has material that might be sensitive to young ears. Do not read aloud to children. I discuss aspects of Christmas excitement that may..or may not exist)
There are 2 pieces of news from Dammam for the world beyond the wall. The first is best explained by the picture. The rain continues. I have added photos to the 'Rainy Days' album. But the flooding that was experienced in Jeddah and Riyadh is happening here. I guest when a country has 3 or 4 rainy days a year there is no need for building drains, or gutters. But that does mean on those 3 or 4 days chaos reigns.....pardon the pun.
Sand does not absorb water easily. It becomes saturated and as most of the Eastern Region is flat, there is very little run off. The government valiantly pumps the water from one location to another. Generally from the road to the sidewalk.
But it was a sight I never thought I would see while in Saudi Arabia. Flooding streets, mini lakes and water everywhere. I even saw a shop selling umbrellas.
The second piece of news is there are New Arrivals. Mick and Alanna from Manchester UK, Wendy from Czech Republic and Florence from Ireland. I briefly met Wendy when we invited the group to coffee at Najjars. Mick and Alanna and I have been emailing for several months.
Welcome guys and hope you enjoy life here in Dammam. At some point I will get a photo to immortalise you in Cyberspace and my blog world.
As for the rest of life here. Christmas celebrations are being planned. This is the underground movement to acknowledge something that does not exist. And I don't mean Santa, who certainly does exist though chimneys are light on the ground here. As for plum pudding, brandiless custard, noggless eggnog, porkless pies, and angeless trees, I am sure the festive season here in Dammam will be just like home..... Hot!!...and dry (on several levels)
Love to all

John The last Florence from Ireland b*****red up nursing for a couple a centuries at least - Hope this one is good value and adds to the kaleidascope of talent there. Love your pie eggnog and custard mind picture
Ronda We were wondering if you got the floods on your side of Country. Must have been quite a site. We continue to look forward to your newsey blog site. Love, Mum and Dad
Trudy Well Rod, this certainly gives new meaning to bathroom punting .... They don't have proper drainage in bathrooms so why on earth would you expect them to have street drainage !!!! Like I said you learn very quickly over there to expect the unexpected. I am just sorry I wasn't there to see it cos I would have been like a kid in a candy shop and been out dancing in that. Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year to all, and as we all know, it doesn't have to be dry if you don't want it to be. Just ask Sid and Rosie they will tell you.
