Fraser Island Part 1B
OK so were driving along the beach and I got my first go at driving the 4wd on the beach - I was pretty good at it too!!!
I didn't do any driving inland as sometimes you were on 2 wheels and it was very unstable and since i wasn't insured to drive i thought it was best no to!!
On the way to the campsite we stopped off at the Maheno Wreck which is unbelievable! It's a natural wreck of a luxury cruise liner which washed ashore. It was built in 1914 as a luxury cruise liner but in 1935 it was sold to the Japanese for scrap metal and it was enroute to Japan (it's final destination) when it ran aground and later on washed up on Fraser Island. It's been there for over 70 years and is so much still intact - it was really amazing to see a real life wreck!
We also did some good shadow statutes against the ship while the sun was setting - easily pleased!! (see the photos)
We decided to stay at a government campsite rather than a beach (as the beach sites aren't sites - u just plonk urself down so there's nothing!!) Our site had outside bbq's and outside sinks with tiolets and hot showers although there were no lights anywhere so it was torches only and no bins so u have to take all ur rubbish to a compound (again because of Dingoes and it's unaccessible for rubbish lorries)
We pitched our tents and had a great bbq and the boys ventured off down to the beach (me & Nadine were not impressed) as it was dark, with no light, and we were worried about dingoes and whether they would find their back as there's no roads but off they went and had a few beers under the stars.
Sleeping was a bit uncomfy as the roll-up mats were pretty thin! We got up on Saturday at 6am as you are not allowed to drive on the beach 2 hours either side of High Tide as basically there is no beach to drive on and there are not many tracks inland so otherwise u are stranded. We had no time for brekkie but headed along the beach towards our 1st destination of the day - Champagne Pools.
