We headed for Waitomo, a place famous for its glow worms and caving. So on our first night we decided to grab the torch and walk into the forest to see the glow worm spectical...Within 10 meters Rich was adament that a cat was watching us from a tree upabove, then Shelly started thinking about the film 'The Decent'. Its a good job the glow worms were awesome, they were tiny and in some places there were hundreds of them, because otherwise between shelly freaking out and Rich thinking that all of Nohas creatures were in the jungle (well to be fair he had had a close encounter with a possum the night before!) that night we would of been out of there a lot sooner! So after a rather hasty retreat back to the car park we decided to camp somewhere with a few more people in sight and made our way back to the town to get some sleep!
The following day we started with some rabbit shearing! The shearing shed had 300 angorra rabbits that they let get ridiculously fluffy before putting them on a rack like torture device and shaving them!! They then made some questionable clothing from the fur they collected! After witnessing this bizzare sight we headed for the waterfalls and caves! The afternoon was spent cave exploring...good preperation for the next days activity.....Tumo Tumo Toobing!
Once again we donned some attractive wet suits (Seemed to be the look of our trip) and we headed across the fields to a ridiculously small hole in the ground. After debating if we could get our bums down the hole we finally climbed on the ladder down into a dark wet cave....alone! We were told to all meet about 20 meters down stream (Shelly nearly turned around there and then!) Anyhow once we'd all made it down we began scrambling through insainly small spaces with water over our heads! Once we'd slipped and slided through the first cave we reached the under ground river where we turned out all our lights and hand in hand explored the first glow worm cave! They looked so pretty, that is until we were told they are actually maggots and the glowing tail was actually their poo! Next thing we jumped into our tubes, literally, we climbed up the side of the cave with our bums wedged in the tube and threw ourselves off backwards into the stream to continue our glow worm drift! After a last swim through a very deep cave home to some eels...that made Rich swim quick, we spotted a small beam of light which blinded us as it opended up into the forest above us. Definitley one of the best activities so far!
