On Monday the 13th of July we left Crystal Brook and headed straight to Birdwood. I'd always wanted to visit the National Motor Museum and today was the day. The National Motor Museum is an automobile museum that was established in 1964 and is Australia's largest motor museum, with over 400 vehicles on display. The museum was really good to go through, the kids also had a lot of fun there. So many cars to see, from the "back to the future" Delorean to Ferraris to Lamborghinis, to F1 cars to Holden's, Fords and motorcycles.
When I was a kid I had a magazine called "Performance Street Cars" and in the issue I had was a show van called "Midnight Express". I remember spending hours looking at this HT Holden van, I just loved that car. So I was more than excited when I came across it in the museum. So many different interesting things here. A tribute and display to Australian Dakar racer Andy Caldecott who died in the Dakar Rally in 2006 was of great interest to me. I loved reading the stories that went with all the vehicles too. For example there was a 1937 (3.5 litre) Bentley on display. It was fully restored and had a great history. Originally purchased new by Mr Stanley Hailwood in Oxford, England. He was former motorcycle GP racer Mike Hailwood's father. The car had made its way from England to America and then Australia. Now this Bentley had recently been donated to the museum by its current owner. I couldn't believe it, who gives away a Bentley!
Lucky for me being school holidays there were activities going on to keep the kids busy. It was great not to be rushed and I really enjoyed spending the time I did in the museum. I could write pages about the vehicles I saw and the stories I read. For example the Leyland Brothers, Land Rover. In 1966 this Land Rover was the first vehicle to cross Australia westernmost point to Australias easternmost. It established the Leyland brothers with the Australian public. However I'll stop there. If you get the chance the museum is well worth a vist.
