From near the caravan park we caught a bus to Manly warf. From there we took the Manly Ferry across to circular key. It was a beautiful morning and great to see Sydney and its weathly coastline from the water.
Arriving at Circular Key we decided The Sydney Opera House was our first stop. It's just a short walk away from Circular Key. The Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre. Construction started 1 March 1959 and wasn't completef until 1973. There are well over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 million people. As one of the most popular visitor attractions in Australia, more than eight million people visit the site annually, and approximately 350,000 visitors take a guided tour of the building each year. It was one of those sereal moments walking around it.
From the Opera House we walked around to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Reffered to as the "Coat Hanger" it is another one of those Australian iconic landmarks that feels sereal to be close to.
Just out of interest the bridges arch is composed of two 28-panel arch trusses; their heights vary from 18m at the centre of the arch to 57m at the ends next to the pylons.[10]
The arch has a span of 504m and its summit is 134m above mean sea level; expansion of the steel structure on hot days can increase the height of the arch by 18cm.
The total weight of the steelwork of the bridge, including the arch and approach spans, is 52,800 tonnes (52,000 long tons; 58,200 short tons), with the arch itself weighing 39,000 tonnes (38,000 long tons; 43,000 short tons). The bridge is held together by six million Australian-made hand-driven rivets.
Construction started in 1923 and the bridge opened in 1932. It was regarded as a triumph over Depression times, earning the nickname "The Iron Lung".
We then walked around "The Rocks", which is a neighbourhood of historic laneways in the shadow of Sydney Harbour Bridge. The area has some of Sydney’s oldest pubs and many of the upscale restaurants have harbour views. It is very trendy and has weekend market we unfortunately have missed.
Following this the afternoon was about done and we were all feeling a little tired. We caught the ferry back to Manly and then the bus back to Narrabeen. A quiet evening. Tomorrow it's Felicity's 9th birthday.
