After years of austerity under communist rule, Romania became free in 1989 . They commenced to finish this over the top building of grandeur and beauty. All the marble, Chrystal and building supplies come from Romania. It is filled with intricate inlaid wood. The rose, white and black marble is stunning. One chandelier weighs several tons and can only be cleaned through an opening in the roof. Everything is spacious and elegant. Many rooms look like the UN with microphones on each desk and translator booths in the back. They built this second largest building in the world ( only the Pentagon is larger) in 5 years - 20,000 workers working day and night. Nadia Comaneci, the gymnast, had her wedding here.
The first communist ruler was assassinated in Moscow by an irradiation pellet put in his earphone, because he disagreed with one of their requests. His successor had a third grade education, could barely write and had difficulty speaking. Poorly qualified people were given power because they were less likely to cause trouble. The more qualified were imprisoned. The Romanians were forced to pay 70% of their income to Russia as a war debt. There was one newspaper, one radio station, etc. They exported 99% of what they produced and did not import anything. By 1980’s everything was rationed. People began listening illegally to the radio and learning what was happening elsewhere. On Dec 19, 1989 a small riot to protect a priest was put down. The ruler tried to make a case and celebrate his actions, but in 4 days time the army switched to the people's side and the communist leaders were shot . Freedom was celebrated on Dec 25, 1989 - what a Christmas present!

Lauren Yep. The rationing was Ceausescu's doing. He needed the money to pay for his and his wife's many vacation homes, etc. At the same time he instituted a tax on women age 26 or older who had not yet had children, which succeeded in raising the population. But, you know, it's probably not a good idea to raise your country's population while also exporting all your food. Ceausescu was a pretty bad leader and Romania was the only communist country to have a bloody transition from communism, largely thanks to him and his crazy policies.
