Monday 10th September
After a very adventures day whereby the train we were on from Naples to Rome unfortunately ran over a man causing major delays. After much deliberation we decided to get off the train and walk to the freeway to get a cab back to naples and then board a high speed which got us to Rome in just over 1hr. We arrived at the airport 20 mins before check in closed and finally landed in Mykonos at around 10.30.
Tuesday 11th September
To make the most of our day we got up early around 8.30 and headed into town to take a look around, visiting the windmills and the old port. Not much was happening around town - everyone was still asleep or at the beach so we decided to join them and headed down to the beach near our hotel where we layer by the beautiful water on lounges and were waited on hand and foot.
Wednesday 12th September
We checked out this morning but didn't have to get our next ferry until 3pm so just layed by the pool all morning and relaxed. We arrived in IOS the well known party island around 5pm headed to digs and again relaxed around the pool until sunset and then enjoyed some dinner. By our surprise a girl walked up to our table and said my name... It was Alicia a girl I worked with a Gymea pub and ended up having a few cocktails with her group of friends for the rest of the night.
Thursday 13th September
Nothing much to report on today... We basically layed by the pool, swam, had some cocktails and then swam and sunbaked some more. Tough Life I know! iOS is well known for it's bars and party scene... So we decided to head into town to check out a few of the bars.. As it was the end of the season it wasn't too busy but that's just how I like it!! Who enjoys queuing for drinks and getting pushed and shoved!! Not me!!
Friday 14th September
Today we headed to Santorini but had another late ferry which meant another day relaxing by the pool. We arrived in Santorini around 7pm so after checking into our hotel we walked up to the main town Fira and had a lovely dinner; Lamb seasoned in lemon and Greek Salad with a lovely glass of wine :) we even saw Donkeys being lead through the street.
Saturday 15th September
This morning we walked back into Fira town to check out the view of the white houses lined along the cliffs and took the cable car down to the old port for a little look around. Then we took the 'must do' Donkey ride up the mountain which was just fantastic!! I think I laughed the whole way up and had smile ear to ear as it was just so much fun and something I had been wanting to do for as long as I can remember!! Those poor donkeys work very hard but it's good to know they get rests between each climb and only do 2-3 per day :) After our donkey ride we caught the bus to Red beach which looked just amazing from a distance with the red sand and rocks clashing with the blue water.
Tonight we look the bus to Oia the town for the best view of Santorinis famous sunsets! I begged Evan (because we are running low on money and he is keeping me in line from spending hundreds) to take me to dinner to a fancy restaurant I found on trip advisor that had good reviews and a view to boot!! And wow didn't it have a view.. We watched the sunset with drink in hand and had a beautiful meal :) something I will remember forever!!
Sunday 16th September
We had another late ferry today.. 640 to Athens so spent the day at Perrissa the black sandy beach where I got very burnt :( it was windy and as I have quite the tan now I though I was invincible... Obviously not as I ended up red raw :( always learn the lesson the hard way hey. Our ferry rude wasn't the most enjoyable... We were on a superjet like a large Catermaran but it rocked from side to side for most of the trip making us feel quite sea sick... Very glad I don't have to get another ferry any time soon. We finally got to our hostel at 1am after our taxi driver had no idea where he as going and had to pull over twice for directions!!
Monday 17th September
Today we set out for a full day of sightseeing first on the agenda; the Acropolis - what an amazing area and the Pathenon an incredible structure!! We wandered around that area for some time taking it all in and then headed to the temple of the Olympian Zeus another large structure that's thousands of years old. Sometimes it's hard to comprehend just our old these buildings and monuments are isn't it. Our last stop for the day was the Ancient Olympic stadium - the Panathenaic stadium. We collected our free audio guides and had a fantastic tour of the stadium. We were allowed to walk anywhere so Evan was running all over pretending he was an athlete whilst I was taking photos - very funny.
After a long exhausting day in the heat we made it to the 4pm changing of the guards just in time.. What an interesting changing of the guards. They did this weird walk in which they kicked and then held their leg up before scraping their foot along the ground. Very strange... You tube it!!
We only had a short trip in the Greek Islands and Athens but it was terrific and we saw and did everything we wanted to and that's the main thing!! We are off to Munich tomorrow ready for Octoberfest on Friday!!
Love Rhiannon and Evan xx
Ps only 2.5 weeks to go :(
