Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Today we had a another wonderful day. We decided to have brekky up in La Terrazza again, and saw the lovely red haired Italian waiter on the way in ( the one "blessed" with red hair by his Irish grandfather), greeted by name by Zoltan, the Hungarian chap again (I think he could be the head waiter), and then had a delicious breakfast. When we returned from brekky our butler popped in to see how we were going. He asked about our dining preferences and suggested that we might like to try the dining by the pool for the evening when we are staying in Cartagena overnight. We agreed and he said he would make that booking. He also asked us if we'd been on a tour of the bridge - when we said we hadn't, he said he'd book us in for that too, on December 11!! He noticed that we still have our single malt, and asked if there was anything else for when he refills our ice bucket this evening. I mentioned that we like Baileys, so he brought us a bottle of Baileys!! After that we decided to sit on the deck and watch the coastline and the sea slipping by. We docked in Acapulco a little early and our stateroom was on the same side as the wharf, so we enjoyed watching the docking procedures. We have guards on the wharf with rifles. The dock is right by a busy road that has many VW Beetle taxis going along it. On top of the hill across the road is a large fort. We then went upstairs to La Terrazza for lunch, with a wonderful bay view, where we saw the same two waiters who greet us so nicely, and then Allan, our dining room waiter who came by and was so pleased to see us! We also booked a table for dinner tonight in La Terrazza. After lunch we returned to our stateroom and Tom went ashore. We hadn't been interested in any of the shore excursions for this port. At lunch the guest lecturer was seated at the next table and the fort across the road, so it turns out, is a museum of the history of Acapulco and that really interested Tom. I am over museums, churches and cathedrals so I stayed in our room, watching the portside activities, and the touching Dolly Parton movie that was on the TV!! We went up for dinner at La Terrazza - we had thinly sliced veal with creamed tuna sauce as antipasto, then I had rigatoni with 4 cheeses and Tom had the pasta parcels. For mains we both had the lemon sole. Dessert was tiramisu for me, and a puff pastry cannelloni for Tom with vanilla bean ice cream, all followed by passion fruit and vodka sorbet. After that we went downstairs to the bar where the barman (who has only met us twice) greeted us before we even got to the door, yelling out "Mr and Madam Tom Collins" in a delighted tone. Ahhh. We sat ourselves at the bar (there was no one else there) and he asked "chocolate martinis for you both?" When we happily agreed he delightedly produced a little jug of chocolate syrup, saying "I have the syrup already - I had this ready for you last night but you didn't come, so we use it tonight" - because the first night we had them he'd had to go off to the kitchen to procure some chocolate sauce! After a while some Americans drifted in, and then two delightful young girls with the most interesting lifestyle joined us at the bar. They'd been to the martini tasting too and we easily convinced them to join us with the chocolate martinis! They were born in Brazil, grew up and live in Lisbon, Portugal, but spend a lot of time also in Mexico City where their parents now live! They've been to Australia and love it, particularly our zoo "with the best view in the world". Despite the barman's attempts to get us to drink a THIRD chocolate martini we retired to our room for a Baileys before bed! On this ship no extra cost for wifi; alcohol whether it be cocktails, French champagne or a bottle of single malt; bottled water to take ashore; laundry use; photos, barista coffees. Our toiletries are Bulgari. We are not passengers or customers, we are beloved guests. On our last cruise (Royal Caribbean) we would have to stop eating our dinner and let it go cold every second night while the waiters did a dance and parade through the dining room. Doesn't happen here. I expect it will on our last night.
