Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Oh I forgot to mention that yesterday morning just before lunch we had a Welcome To Silversea cocktail reception where they introduced us to executive staff and talked about ongoing benefits, including a 5 % discount for family members! We had a lovely time and spent a while chatting to an opera singer who is part of their contracted staff. So, after breakfast at La Terrazza we returned to our cabin and watched the coastline slip by as we approached Huatulco (and caught a movie on the TV that Tom wanted to see). It's so interesting watching the port machinations and the ship manoeuvrability. The town looks incredibly idyllic. We ducked up to the pool deck to grab a quick lunch, surprised by Allan (the waiter from the dining room) who wasn't serving in our area but came over to greet us and shake our hands. After lunch we went ashore to join our shore excursion. There were little electric golf buggies to take people along the wharf, which was really good because it was a long long wharf and the buses were way beyond the security post, after the shopping precinct (of course). Tom procured a buggy for us and Noelene - cost was merely a tip. So we were told about the town, which is only 30 years old. The government decided to make it a tourist attraction with the nine bays in the area, so they moved the fishermen to a different location. The villages are set out in a very neat and tidy fashion. We went into the town of Crucecita to visit the Catholic Church. The guide described to us the amazing artworks we would see on the ceiling, but after we walked up the steep embankment past the hawkers, we found there was a wedding being conducted and no admittance was allowed (and rightfully so). We walked across the town square to an artisan centre where we were shown how they weave their rugs, and they explained the development of the dyeing process using the little cochineal bugs that live on the cactus. Then it was back on the coach and we drove over to the Copalita archaeological site and museum via the many resort villages. Unfortunately the bus driver didn't get out the portable step for the last step off (with their deep gutters) so I hurt my knee a tad. After looking through the museum I decided not to proceed through to the archeological site, but to sit in the quiet of the rainforest while Tom and our group looked around. I was soon joined by the lovely Noelene from Brisbane who found the trek too hard with her double knee replacement. The rest of our group were a little underwhelmed by the ruins. When we returned to the wharf precinct Tom procured another buggy and the three of us returned to the ship. We decided to dine in our room. We were so hot, tired and bothered. So after some refreshing showers we ordered dinner and our butler delivered it and set it up nicely. We opened our bottle of Heidsieck and had a lovely evening, after the butler showed us how to use the DVD player - we watched a son of Griswald movie.
