I had the worse day EVER yesterday! It was like I had all the bad luck in the world put on me - I couldnt leave the country without something going wrong...!
I checked out of the hostel and spent the morning in Wicked Travel uploading my pictures and was picked up by the shuttle to take me to the airport at 13:00. My flight wasnt until 16:00 so I had plenty of time... Or so I thought.
The shuttle dropped me off at the International terminal for me to get my flight to Auckland, New Zealand. I got off of the shuttle and made my way through to check in, to find out that I was in the wrong terminal and had to be in the domestic terminal because I was going via Brisbane (I would just like to add that this was not stated on my ticket / confirmation at all). The problem was, was that the domestic terminal was about 15-20 minutes away and I had to get another shuttle from the international termianl to the domestic terminal.
I went outside to get the T Bus to the domestic terminal and missed it by seconds, I actually saw it drive off as I arrived. The next shuttle was due to arrive twenty minutes later but didnt turn up, so I ended up waiting 40 minutes to get the shuttle. It finally arrived, I jumped on and within 15 minutes I was in the domestic terminal to check in. I joined the que, which took me another half an hour to get through, I got to the front of the line and they told me I was in the wrong que and that I had to see a guy at the end called Daniel, because he was dealing with the international flights (although I was in the domestic terminal). Strange.
So by this point, I was getting really pissed off, and just wanted to check in and get something to eat in the departure lounge. I met an Australian girl called Polly who was on the same flight as me and was visiting New Zealand to see her boyfriend for three weeks; we ended up spending the whole time together - we are going to meet up in Sydney later on in the year.
The flight to Brisbane was only an hour and a half. We had to change planes, so we got off of the plane in the domestic terminal, had to get a train to the international termianl and check back in again. This is where it got worse...
I was going through Security, Polly went first and met me the other side. They spent about five-ten minutes looking in my bag through the x-ray machine thing. My bag finally came out (after causing a huge delay behind me), I picked up the bag and I turned around to walk off and there was a male and female security guard standing either side of me asking me if Id mind going with them for further 'security checks'. I obviously agreed and they took me to an area at the side of the security room behind folding doors. They proceeded to explain that I was to be tested for explosives and drugs. I had to strip down to my trousers and vest (taking off my jumper and flipflops) and had to be bloody frisked and they ran a maching through my bag and over my entire body. I was so shocked, I had no idea what was going on! Anyway, of course I was clear of anything dodgy and they thanked me for my time and told me I was okay to go through the gates. Drama!
So, I finally got on the plane to Auckand, a flight to last two and a half hours. The turbulance was pretty bad the whole way over here so we werent allowed to take our seatbelts off the entire journey. I arrived at Auckland International airport at 12:30am (just after midnight) and went through customs and immigration fine. I grabbed my bag, said goodbye to Polly and went outside to figure out how to get to the city.
The taxi driver I spoke to, quoted me $70 to get to the hostel! I was like 'Um I dont think so - Ive had a really bad day - and that price will make it worse'! He looked at me like I was a complete nutter. The buses had stopped so I jumped on a shuttle which cost me $30. It was actually well worth the money considering how far we were out of the city and I even got a tour of the whole of the North Island (!) because we had to drop off four other people first. I finally got to the hostel at 02:00 and checked straight in. I went up to the bathroom to get ready for bed and walked in on Adam (who flew over earlier in the day) sitting on the toilet, completely out of his tree, having a c**p. I couldnt stop laughing! (Mixed toilets here by the way). So I ended up going down to the bar for one drink and then get into bed at 03:30, only to be kept awake by Adams terrible snoring until 05:00. I got up at 08:00 this morning and felt absolutely terrible.
Adam and I walked through town to but Adam a jumper because he left his at the hostel in Sydney. Prat! Its pretty cold out here, you couldnt leave the hostel without wearing a cardigan or jumper, maybe even a scarf. The sun is shining though.
We took a shuttle bus to the Antarctic and Underwater world and spent the afternoon there. It was really nice, we saw lods of penguins and tropical fish. I met a guy who works there (whilst Adam was in the toilet) and we got chatting and we are meeting up with him when we get back to Auckland in a couple of weeks time. Result!
Adam is in bed now, exactly where I am heading after Ive leaft this blog. I am shattered. Yesterday was a very long day. Nothing planned for tonight, just looking and planning on tours to book for the South Island. We fly to Christchurch on Sunday 28th September.
I cant believe I am in New Zealand - it feels so sureal.
