We had a bit of lie in this morning....woke up at 9am and had an early brunch at the restaurant in the backpackers we are staying at before heading to the waterfront to explore the shopping and eating area. And then we were supposed to have gone to Robben Island at 1pm but due to the pathetic weather conditions of strong winds it was cancelled so hopefully weather permitting we shall do it tomorrow. Again due to the weather we couldnt go up table mountain in the afternoon, hence, we decided to drive down to see the penguins.
We headed down the M6 to Simon's Town. The weather seemed to get worse as we drove along but a ray of hope emerged as we saw some sunrays as we got to Boulders beach. The parking attendant was friendly enough to tell us that after parking the car, if we turned right instead of left, we would save 40 rand each and see the penguins for free! They hardly reached our knees...some were resting on their nests while others were making their mating noises! The winds were now getting very strong so after taking lots of pictures in a very short time, we then decided to drive down to Cape point.
We parked the car and then had a short trek up to the lighthouse which once again left us slightly breathless! The views from the lighthouse were the same as from 500m below....we could have just saved time not going up. After all that trekking, we were hungry so found a store that didnt have many vegetarian options so ordered a Napoleon pizza which basically is a Margarita....how exciting! Had to add on some flavouring with salt and pepper as it was very bland and eat it standing in the convienent store as the baboons were lurking outside waiting for the opportunity to attack an innocent person silly enough to walk out with food in their hands.
We then drove to the cape of good hope...saw some ostriches by the beach....not a sight you see very often! It also had lots of cliffs there, it is the most south-west point of Africa..by this time it was extremely windy so only stayed for a few minutes before driving back to the backpackers. Decided to take a different scenic route home but after driving for a few minutes, it seemed very remote so we did a 180 and went back the route we took out.
As the weather had been pretty awful, we decided to stay in and catch up on our diaries, reading books etc. Hope tomorrows weather is better. :)
