still sad that we are leaving the perhentian islands but we have to move on... things to see and do!
we had to be up early at 6.30 to catch a boat back to the mainland and then had a torturous 9 hour coach journey to kuala lumpur. the coach was very luxurious - only 3 seats to an aisle but it still didnt help with such a long journey. plus sarah started feeling really sick, and i had to ask the coach to pull over. she felt ill for the whole journey which is unlike her.
finally we reached K.L - seemed like a lifetime! we then had to figure out where the coach had dropped us off and catch a LRT train to chinatown where most backpacker accomodation is. the place we wanted to stay in was full so had to settle for another place called wheelers guesthouse, which was ran by a man with loads of piercings and a pet monkey, and a transexual on reception who didnt know how to smile. our room was a box - i could reach out and touch one side of the room with my hand, and the other with my leg! and was also windowless. its only costing us around 3 pounds a night each so i guess you cant complain too much! the area is great as there are loads of cheap eats with fantastic chinese food! and great markets.
we decided to take our first day easy as we were still tired from the travelling. visited the lake gardens (saw some freaky characters there - one who came and sat next to us and ate my raisins out of my raisin bread, and another guy who was looking at us and doing something i cant even write here!) think we had seen enough of the lake gardens! moving on....!
sarah is still feeling sick... dont think it was travel sickness yesterday, must be a stomach bug so went back to the room.
its the 27th may and its sarahs 30th birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! big celebrations you think......umm no... sarah is really ill with her stomach bug. she has really bad cramps that double her over and cant get off the toilet! shes up all night with it and its bad. she feels very weak. she somehow manages to put on a brave face and comes with me to the petronas towers (in photo) they are very impressive. we go inside where there is a huge shopping mall, and i get told off by security for taking a video! i must look dodgy! outside the towers are some pretty gardens and fountains.
we then walk to the telecommunication tower which you can go up and get a view of the city. was good to see, and very high up! we also saw a random animal park which was included in the ticket and a cultural centre where we watched some traditional dancing and listened to some traditional music.
we had a walk around the markets. our plan was to go to hard rock cafe for sarahs birthday, but she cant eat anything, shame. we went back so sarah could lie down. what a birthday for her!
on saturday we went to visit the batu caves (thought i was going to do it by myself as sarah still isnt any better) we had a bumpy bus ride to get there. was really impressive. there is a giant golden statue at the entrance and 272 steps to climb!! a few monkeys at the side to dodge as well! once at the top there is an impressive cave opening with a high ceiling. you walk down more steps inside where there are little hindu statues lit up, then climb up a few more steps to a cave that has an open roof. here is where hindu ceremonies take place which was interesting to watch.
as we started to climb back down the steps it started to pour with rain, so we had to wait till it eased off before we could catch the bus back.
sarah had another rest back at the guesthouse, and then we sat on the rooftop lounge area and played card games with a canadian guy till it was time for bed.
i like kuala lumpur as a city, though it was a shame sarah has been ill for the entire stay here. if she doesnt get better soon we will have to go see a doctor :(
