We actually managed to get to sleep quite quickly despite the banging of the music downstairs in Gilligans. I woke up very slightly at 4am when some American girls in our dorm left to fly home, but other than that I slept solidly until about 9am - probably 9 or 10 hours sleep.
We had to get up to check out and headed with our backpacks to the Greyhound office to see if the buses were running - they still weren't so we needed to find somewhere to stay tonight. We decided to go back to our original place, Corona, opposite Gilligans, because it is only $10. We have a slightly bigger room this time and our roommate is an English girl called Donna.
We went to Woolworths to get some breakfast (I got a massive slab of watermelon and a yoghurt - health kick) and headed back to Corona to pick up our keys. The sun was trying really hard to come out so we went to sunbathe at the Lagoon. We managed to get some good sun time in, although we had to take cover a few times for some showers. For lunch I bought a bread roll, a slice of cheese and a slice of chicken for $1.70 altogther from Woolworths - it's much cheaper buying food from a supermarket!
At about 4pm we went back to Corona, where we showered and read our books for a bit. We went to a bottleshop and bought a bottle of Passion Pop, but decided to try strawberry, a different flavour this time.
Back at Corona we finished getting ready and had our drink before heading to the Woolshed for our free meal. I had vegetarian spaghetti again, it was really nice.
There was a quiz going on so we had a go - it was actually quite hard! We came near the top though - the lowest score was 3/20 and the highest was 15/20 and we got 9/20 so we didn't do too badly! A little bit later there was a goldfish racing contest. There were two long tanks with a chequered finish line at the end, and to race your goldfish you had to blow a straw behind it to encourage it to swim forward. I was chosen to represent England (there was also USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Japan, Holland and Sweden). I won the first heat against Australia - my fish swam very quickly to the end. In the semi finals I was against Holland - my fish was going all over the place and I was sure I was going to lose, but eventually he obeyed me and swam to the finish line. It took a while but I still managed to beat Holland! In the final I was against Ireland, unfortunately I wasn't able to beat Ireland's huge fish, but I didn't mind at all. The prize was a free bungy jump - I would have been terrified so I'm glad I didn't win. If I had won I would have forced myself to do it so as not to waste my prize, but I'd probably have died of a fear induced heart attack or something on the way down. I'd rather skydive than bungy jump! My runners up prize was a Woolshed t-shirt so I was still pleased! All night long people kept congratulating me on my efforts, I felt like a minor celebrity for the evening!
We had been told by some young Aussie guys who work on the reef trip boats, that there was a nearby bar who do drinks for $1, so we asked around until we found out where it was and went there for a drink to save money, before heading back to the Woolshed.
We had a really good dance until about 2am. There was a wet t-shirt competition where a few girls danced sluttily to Christina Aguilera (Dirrty - what else?) and were simultaneously squirted with a hose. They all ripped open their t-shirts, but one girl actually took off her t-shirt and bra and was dancing topless! She obviously won (it was judged on cheer volume) but I bet she'll regret that in the morning!
Dad texted me earlier to tell me my bill was 534 pounds (no pound sign on this PC). I knew it would be big but I can't believe that figure! I have now turned my phone off and won't be touching it unless it's absolutely necessary. For that reason I have paid $2 across the road in Gilligans to write my blog, instead of writing it on my phone.
I think we are stuck in Cairns again tomorrow, so be prepared for another samey entry!
Let's hope we eventually make it down south....
