After the pig roast yesterday, or should I say piglet roast after the size of the thing they strung up, I was ready for my trip to Victoria Falls this morning. As with Lake Kariba I could imagine Mum and Dad seeing the same things I saw today over 30 years ago. Magical.
Four of us took a taxi to the falls, costing $15 there and back. We saw the baboons rummaging in the bins and a few coming a little too close for comfort - good job we had some sticks again! We walked along the Falls, but were dismayed to find we could only go so far, after which it became Zimbabwe's side of the Falls - from all accounts, the better side. It would have meant buying a $50 visa just to cross the border and have a look so we walked back and on the top of the Falls where people were offering a guided swim to Livingstone Island where Livingstone first saw the Falls, unfortunately it was $90 and none of us had our bathers. Oh well.
I made up for not seeing the better side by going up in a helicopter to see both sides! $99 for just ten minutes, but my gosh it was worth it. I nearly let one of the other girls go in the front seat where I was heading, but luckily I didn't let any inferiority complex stop me from getting the best seat! We saw the Falls thundering below, they did indeed seem to be better on the Zimbabwe side. When's Mugabe going again?
