I woke up this morning after three and a half days on a train, in my makeshift seat bed, still moving. Rocking from side to side, bouncing up and down, slowing down and speeding up.
Thank goodness we were getting off today, this is starting to get old. We reached Yaroslavysky station in Moscow, bang on time at 1:58pm. I was so relieved to see the giant Moscova sign on top of the station, Beijing to Moscow another epic journey completed.
I walked my group into the metro and took them to the Gamma Delta hotel with out issue. As much as I loved the Trans-Mongolian, this doing tours blind business is starting to s*** me and it was nice to be back on familiar turf. Once we were at the hotel, the group were obviously impressed by its comparative opulence, compared with the other places on the trip.
I got everyone checked in and went up to my room to get changed and wash three and half days of dust, sweat and dirt from myself. I also did a complete resort of my hand luggage and found the missing piece of my lap top charger underneath a box of exploded paperclips. Relief. I really did not want to spend my free day in Moscow trying to communicate lap top charger at various Russian electronic shops.
At 6pm I had to trek downstairs to give the three new people joining the group their pre departure briefing. After that, we met the rest of the group at 7pm as I had offered to take everyone out for dinner and to see Red Square all lit up at night.
We got the metro to Red Square and it took everyone's breath away, which gave me a real kick. Moments like that are why I enjoy my job so much. We hung around in the square taking photos and I explained what all the buildings were, before we went into the GUM centre and had dinner at the cafeteria. Moy had pickled herring and as usual peer pressured me into trying some. I really need to figure out a way around his Jedi mind tricks! The herring was ok, but honestly I think I preferred the crickets in Beijing.
After dinner we went back out into the square and took pictures of it all lit up. I then escorted some of the group back to the metro and put them on the train back to the hotel. I went back to the square to collect Kate, Gen and Moy who had wanted to stay a bit longer and walked them to the same metro station, which had now closed. Luckily, I knew how to get into it via another entrance. I think they were impressed, actually I was impressed as it was the same metro station that Sara and I had been lost in for 45 minutes and I can now negotiate it with my eyes closed.
We finally got back to the hotel and had a drink in the bar, a much needed JD and coke for me and then went off to bed.
