Today we were up early and it was another good day for sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt. Actually I can't believe I managed to find my Hawaiian shirt in the state I was in, let alone have a shower and take down the tent. I made my entrance into the area we had been allocated for breakfast, which was followed by laughs and snickers by the rest of the group.
On the way out to Lalibela today we passed an old troop carrier and I managed to climb up and have my picture taken on it. We stopped for lunch and were surrounded by locals with guns. I managed to talk one into letting me have my picture taken with his gun. That was an interesting conversation, considering he didn't speak English and I don't speak Amharic and I was hung over as hell and possibly still a little drunk.
After lunch some of us climbed up a nearby cliff to see a rock hewn church that was under construction. It was great to see people hollowing out the rock, just as they must have done in the Valley of the Kings in ancient times. It was quite a steep climb and I had to slide down on my bum, much to the amusement of the locals.
For a long truck drive it was a pretty interesting day. We arrived quite late. The hotel was lovely and cozy and had hot water! Tomorrow we are going to visit the rock hewn churches.
