So what have we been up to for the past few days? Well it's amazing how much you actually do whilst relaxing. This place is still the best place we have experienced so far and will be very sad to leave. We have to say if you have any plans to visit Cambodia, go to Kampot and stay at the Bodhi Villa. It's rustic, relaxing, great location with even better food and great staff who are more like mate's. We have been taking full advantage of the river side pontoon and there is nothing like a wake up than getting out of bed and jumping straight into the river! We have had some great nights just sitting up at the bar learning tricks, drinking and talking into the wee hours. We were talking to one of the bar staff about familys and saying that we were both from big familys but we sharp changed our views when the barman informed us that his dad has 12 brothers, he has 8 brother and 4 sisters and that he has around 100 nephews/neices. Crazy. I suppose they dont really watch TV here so theres not much more to do then go to bed for a bit of "how's your father?".
So for the last couple of days we have been using the trusty bikes from our digs to get out and about in Kampot and I have to say the things we have been able to see with our own eyes has been fantastic. Sort of things you only really see on TV or in magazines. Riding through the little villages of stick and tin shack housing with chicken's in the yard and cows secured to trees by rope so they caint stray too far, the salt farms and the paddy fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. Whilst riding along all you can hear is the word "HELLO!" spilling from every locals mouth, especially the kids. On one occasion we heard a faint "heeeelllllooooo......." and on turning round to find the source of the voice we notice it was a chap about 300 metres away standing on his porch. They are extremely friendly and just love to say hello as you pass. You should see the smiles on the kids faces once you have said hello back.
Today after spending the first few hours of our day lazing on the pontoon in the sun, we took our trusty bikes again out for a ride down to one of the local schools that is just outside of Kampot about 30-40 minutes away. We had arranged to help out for a few hours and turned up to kids running all over playing football and generally having a great time. We entered the class room to even more kids and after speaking to Mr Tee, the man who organises the whole thing, we sat down with the kids and started drawing with them and helping them with the way they pronounced English words. This was amazing and within minutes we were swomped by kids with requests of things they wanted drawing so they could colour them in. I lost count on how many Elephant's, Tiger's, Monkey's, Bear's, Gecko's and what ever else we had to draw for them. It was great though to have all these kids around you with smiles beaming from there faces just because you drew them a picture. Some of the kids even drew us picture that we have kept and will be put in a scrap book of our travels one day. My picture was of a Dinosaur in a dress and Ashleigh got a lovley Swan.
After drawing with the kids for a few hours they were given a lesson on how to brush their teeth by the other volunteers who have been working with the school for the past week or so. There is something fasinating about watching 30 kids standing there with tooth brushes moving them around in their gob's. Afterwards they were all given a tube of tooth paste to go with their tooth brushes and asked to brush their teeth. Watching them all run for cups of water and starting to brush their teeth was one of those things that you realise that you dont know what you've got. A tooth brush and tooth paste was like christmas day for these kids. Bless them. Tommorow we return to the same school to help build a house for one of the local poor familys which should be great as we can go to bed that night knowing that we havent only helped build a house but also helped give a family a home.
Love Peter and Ashleigh x
