Well a lot has been going on since we last updated this so we will start from the begining. We woke up late to catch the bus to the border crossing due to the fact we met a group of travelers on our last night in Bangkok at our digs. One drink lead to another, the conversation was flowing and before we knew it, it was 4am. We were supposed to get up at 10am to catch the bus but slept through our alarm and rushed out of bed at 12.50.pm. We collected our things together as quick as we could and caught the sky train to Mo Chit where the bus station was located....or so we thought. On the Map it is shown right next to the sky train stop but this was not the case. After an hour and a halfs walk in the baking heat, fully loaded up with our backpacks and after thinking we had made it to Mo Chit bus station three different times, we finally got there.
We managed to catch the 3.15pm bus to Aranya Prathet which is a short drive away from the boarder crossing. We we told that the bus would take four hours giving us enough time to catch the boarder as it closed at 8pm. Unfortunatly the bus took a lot longer. About five and a half hours in total meaning that we would never make the boarder in time. On the bus though we met two girls who were also traveling to Cambodia called Alex and Dan. This was great as we picked up some tips and agreed to share a taxi once we had made it over the boarder to spread the cost. But having missed the boarder for that day, from the bus stop the four of us grabbed a tuk-tuk to take us to a cheap hotel for the night to get our heads down. We paid 300 baht for the room (7-8 pounds) and we got what we paid for. Very basic with a Gecco lizard on the wall thrown in for free. So a new string was added to my bow LIZZARD CATCHING! It done the job though and it had a tv with american channels available so watched some WWE wrestling which I loved, Ashleigh not so much.
We woke early the next morning as we had arranged to be taken to the boarder at 9am. Once we arrived it was a weird experience as it was a bit like the airport off Star Wars. It seemed that we had to keep filling out the same info again and again and had to keep moving on through the different stages of the boarder. We were granted our visa's for $20 (US) each. We took the free shuttle bus that droped us off at a local taxi/bus services in Poipet. From here we paid $40 between us and got in a taxi to take us to Siem Reap. This took about two hours and we were droped off at a local tuk-tuk firm to take us to our hotels. We parted from Alex and Dan, said our goodbye's and hot footed it to our digs. We are staying at the King Angkor Villa and paying $4 a night which is cheap cheap cheap but for the price you cant expect much. Having a shower I spotted a Cockroach in the top corner of the bathroom. So another string to the bow was added FLICKING AND FLUSHING COCKROACHES DOWN THE TOILET. The staff are great though and really helpfull with infomation. After dropping our bags in our room, a quick shower, we hit the streets to have a walk about our new home for the next few days.
We grabed some good cheap food from a resturant on bar street and grabbed a few local beers. We found a great bar called X Bar which is a roof top bar that has free pool to shoot and cool indie tunes playing in the background. After having a few pitchers we decided to move onto another bar but on our way out bumped into Alex and Dan who were going into the bar we had just came back out of. So back in we went for a few more drinks and a chat. We left Alex and Dan in X Bar and walked down bar street. We sat upstairs in the Red Piano bar where Angelina Jolie went to drink whilst filming Tomb Raider, watched the night life go by whilst sinking some ice cold beers. This was great and we sat there till about 12am. We got back to the digs and straight to bed.
This morning we where up at 4am as we had arrange to go on a temple tour including watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat temple. This was amazing as we were guided in by torch light as you couldnt see one step in front of you. We were seated next to the pond facing the temple and slowly but surely the sun came up. Words cant describe, absolutley fasinating and as Ashleigh described very mystical. Once sun had rose we walked around and inside the great temple. We were lost for words. It was huge but brilliant. We done a number of different temples throughout the morning but the ones that stood out for us were the Angor Wat and Ta Prohm. Ta Prohm was brilliant. You walk past part of the temple and the roots of the vast trees have either grown over the building or in some cases totaly took over it. Amazing to see though. The roots of these trees were so huge we couldnt get over it. I think this is the temple that they actually filmed most of the Tomb Raider film.
We got back to our digs at around 12pm after our morning tour of many temples. We have just had a nap to charge the batteries as we are off to meet Alex and Dan for some drinks 9pm. Im trying to convince Ashleigh that we should get a fish pedicure where you put your feet in a fish tank and hundreds of little fish eat all the dead skin off your feet. Not sure if she is sold on the idea though. We have been loving our time in Cambodia so far, its more chilled out and more accesible to our needs than Bangkok. The only thing that is upsetting is the kids begging. We have been warned on this and told many times not to give money to them, however it is so hard saying no. They are beautiful kids and really are interested in your life, one was talking to Ashleigh today and gave her a bracelet she was meant to be selling beacuse she said she wanted her to have it as she is so beautiful, Ashleigh nearly cried on the spot! When we volunteer at an Orphanage here we know its going to be heart wrenching! We have booked a 6 hour bus journey tomorrow off to Phnom Penh to stay there for a few nights and visit the killing fields. Siem Reap is great though we both love it.
Will keep you updated when we can.
Love Peter and Ashleigh x
