Day 7. After the usual Big Sunday breakfast we decided to go shopping for opals! I dropped Raechel off at the recommended Opalios store with her credit card (dangerous, yes!) while I drove out of town to the Serbian underground church. What a beautiful church, but I soon got caught up in a very solemn Serbian orthodox service with several tough looking miners, chanting, candles, incense and a mysterious white bearded priest hidden behind glass and curtains! Time to get outa here! Next the Catacomb underground church, an Anglican service just finished and much more comfortable here. Back in town to pick up Raechel and her newly acquired gems, then a visit to the Old Timers Mine first dug in 1916. Lots of narrow tunnels and chambers showing the harsh conditions of early miners and a wonderful museum. Next onto Faye's underground house, dug out by several women in the 1950's, so many comfortable rooms and levels and even a swimming pool! Over 80% of Coober Pedy's residents still live underground as summer days can exceed 47 degrees. We then drove a 60km loop out to the Breakaways on sunset and along the dog fence. Fantastic colours on sunset. Dinner tonight at home of mushroom risotto.
