Day 9. From Kulgera Roadhouse another early departure onto the Stuart Highway going North. Turned west after 74km onto the Lasseter Highway towards Yulara. No wind today so made good fuel use and distance. The highway being widened in places, no doubt to cater for many large coaches into Uluru. The road sparkling in places with some mineral? Red soil sandhills and groves of magnificent desert oak. Stopped for a great view of flat topped mesa Mt Connor often mistaken for Uluru. Arrived onto Yulara Village on lunchtime, allocated a great van site for 3 nights by some lovely Aboriginal girls in the park office, picnic lunch then a walk through the village square and upmarket Sails Resort. Raechel bought a beautiful Aboriginal painting by local Pitjantjatjara woman from a stall in the park. Then we drove 20km out to Uluru to witness a spectacular sunset on the Rock with dozens of other campers. The changes in colour to brilliant red just amazing, the Rock being formed 700 million years ago from sandstone and conglomerate sediments. Back at the van dinner tonight barbecued lamb chops and salad. Drove 333 km today, sunny about 20 degrees.
