Day 15. Up early as we have a big day trip planned out to the West Macdonnell Ranges National Park and Hermannsburg, traditional home of the Aranda people. Along Namajira Drive first stop Simpsons Gap, then a walk through narrow deep Standley Chasm, Ellery Big Hole, the Ochre Pits and finally beautiful Ormiston Gorge for a walk and picnic lunch. This gorge is very special with its pinkish red walls, waterhole, sandy beaches and sheer cliffs. Then walked along the Finke River at Glen Helen Gorge where it meanders 700 km through a narrow opening. Imposing Mt Sonder becoming closer as we turned south past huge Gosse Bluff created by an ancient meteorite strike. Hit the corrugated red dirt for about 50km on Larapinta Drive to town of Hermannsburg for a visit to the historic first Aboriginal Mission in the Northern Territory established by the Lutheran Church and German missionaries in 1877. The old church and residences very rustic. Albert Namatjira born here, visited his old house. Afternoon tea of apfel strudel to die for! Arrived back in Alice just on dark so a quick pickup of roast chicken for dinner at our van. drove 440km today, Sunny and warm 21 degrees.
