Tango After the Market
Today I got up early. My room mates were all still out at 5am so I hazard a guess they'll miss breakfast. I'm told later they didn't go tangoing but in fact just hung out with friends or went clubbing. I'm also told (SPOILER ALERT) that the whole Tango/Argentina thing is not all that we believe. People AREN'T dancing around in the streets at every given opportunity and it's mostly all just a big show for us tourists! Booo!
Anyway I still did what I intended today and wasn't disappointed. The market is HUGE and takes up a huge long street about 30 blocks long, finishing (or starting I guess) at a big plaza square thing. This is where the dancing was due to commence after the market. No those of you who know me even a tiny bit will know that markets are in fact my worst nightmare. I'm a bit of a bloke, sorry, um, guy (trying to wean myself off Englishisms) when it comes to shopping of any sort; decide what I want, find, and buy. End of. But I forced myself to experience this weekly event nonetheless. More to the point the hostel was WAY too far away by now and walking back for a nap wasn't an option.
Anyway, I was glad I stuck it out cos I saw some pretty funny sights. Hopefully you'll see the pics. As things were starting to die down a bit I plonked myself down on a chair outside a cafe and sipped a coffee waiting for things to liven up. It was 25 degrees (27 tomorrow yuk) so a coffee probably wasn't the best choice!
The market finished and the tangoing began. About 6 men and women all performed then we were all invited to have a go. Some did. I didn't. It's a particularly sociable place, Buenos Aires. So for the 1st time I've felt a bit lonely. So far I've been happy to walk into a restaurant/cafe/bar and sit alone but not so much here. Maybe it's the place, maybe it's me getting a bit home sick. Who knows. And maybe that's why this tango story isn't very good. Sorry about that.
Got back, showered and early night
