How to ride a scooter italian style!
After the booze last night we were feeling a little delicate so had a lie in until 12. We eventually stirred and then got ready to book a room in florence and then onto hire the scooters.
We got to the laundrette / internet shop and managed to book a twin room for £22 a night. Just incase i didnt mention there are no free wifi spots in italy due to a new internet law where you have to always show your passport to get access!
We then wandered to the bike shop signed our life away, which later turns out we agreed we knew thew italian highway code? Oh course we do! The owner then took a deposit of €400 each on my credit card and let us loose on the streets of rome with a 100 cc scooter. After a dubious start i got the hang of it and we were soon skirting in and out of traffic. Now we didnt know the italian highway code but this is the copey and aldos guide to riding italian style.
1. Dont indicate
2. Dont stop at zebra crossings and aim for people
3. Always get to the front of the queue at the lights
4. Drag start off at every green light
5. Run red lights - like copey did!
6. Crazy u turns are a must when lost
7. Always go as fast as possible
8. Dont plan your route just ask other bikers on the way round
Well by the end of our 4 hours we were true italian scooter champions and riding like the locals, we even pulled a couple of dodgy u turns and copey went straight through the reds! We managed to get upto 80 km per hour on a dual carriage way, we may have had some speeding tickets we will never know i guess! We then filled the bikes upto return them, mine cost €2 and copeys was €4 for 4 hours of drag racing throughout rome. The rental came in at €30, in my opinion best day of rome, if you go to rome its a must to rent a scooter, just remember the guide!
