Our Global Gallivants
We took a 4 hour tour of Salt Lake City today. We were most interested to see Mormon Square but that was not included in the tour. Tour guides are not allowed in Mormon Square because they have their own volunteers on the property. While the tour was having lunch in one of the Mormon restaurants, we went and took photos in the square. Pretty impressive gardens and buildings. There are a lot of flowers planted in Salt Lake which is in itself impressive because this is the desert. Temperature on one of the billboards said 92 degrees and dry, of course. The history of the Latter Day Saints is interesting. They were very hard working, industrious pioneers. Because of their allowance of polygamy, they were shunned and forced out of several places in the U.S. Brigham Young decided that they couldn't keep picking up and moving, so they decided to look for a place they could stay permanently. They decided on the desert of Salt Lake City. The area was uninhabited except for some Indian Tribes and belonged to Mexico at the time. We also went to one of the cathedrals where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings accompanied by the pipe organ. The organist did a 30 minute demo.We also visited the Capitol Building, but did not go inside the library, which is supposed to be very impressive architecturally. Also drove by the hospital and university. Wasn't what we had in mind for the tour because the places we wanted to see, we didn't go inside, but just drove past. From there we drove to Bryce Canyon. Got here just before sunset and saw a few sandstone formations in the Red Canyon. Wow!
