Noyelles Travels
Got up early at Jane's command to catch the 9.30 bus (Dick’s
memory) to Trapani, had breakfast & set off early as Jane thought the bus
went at 9.00. You guessed it, Jane was
right again!! Caught the bus & in
great style we went via an interesting route including the port below
Agrigento, Sciacca, Marsala & the Trapani (Birga) airport. The countryside
is very beautiful, rolling & occasionally rugged but covered in olive
groves & vineyards & the roads are good with long viaducts & some
tunnels. Arriving at 12.30 fortunately,
we were able to check in to the apartment in the old town (only accommodation
available, big yachting regatta on over the weekend) very basic. Wandered through the town and we were blown
away by the elaborate facades of most of the buildings in the main street. Walked down to the sea and watched some of the
yacht racing a perfect day for it. The
yachts are called '44s’ of the one class & it looked pretty competitive
from where we were.
The Chiesa del Pursgatorio was a surprise, around the walls
were the Misteri, stations of the cross, which are carried through the streets
on Good Friday by the various Guilds. The figures are full size and originally were
made in the 18th century but most have been repaired at times
especially after the bombing in 1943.
We dined at a fairly upmarket, by our standards restaurant
which was very pleasant & went to bed early in the fold out settee bed. This is the most disappointing accommodation so far, hardly enough room for the cases on the floor with the bed extended, if you wanted the light to read in bed the fridge & TV had to be unplugged.
