We left Raglan quite early and drove to Waitomo. Danielle and quite a few others off our bus had been given activity vouchers from Stray when they bought their passes. They had all decided to use them to go down the Haggis Honking Holes in Waitomo. Me being me decided that I didn't want to be left out and signed up to go with them (even though, I'm sure I'm claustrophobic). I was ok on the bus but started to get a little nervous when I got to Waitomo. Putting on a brave face, I climbed aboard the special yellow bus with the others and off we went to begin our caving adventure. I was ok during the whole struggling into the already soaking wet suits and happy enough practising how to abseil but the look on my face when I reached the ladder to climb into the caves must have been priceless. It was at that point, as I was looking down into the dark caves that I almost chickened out but foolish pride took over. With Rowan shouting encouragement from the bottom of the ladder and Danielle at the top, I made my way into the caves. I was in the smaller group with Danielle, Rowan, Julia and Pam. I figured that would be better than hanging around all the time waiting for the bigger group to do all the abseils and stuff. I was second person down the first abseil which was quite enjoyable. I wasn't feeling claustrophobic at all, well not untill just after the second abseil when I realised that the only way out of the small cave we were waiting in was a small tunnel almost filled with water. When our guide joined us in the cave I did tell him there was no way I was crawling through that hole but seeing as there was nowhere else to go, I got on my hands and knees and crawled through. After that there was one more abseil and a section where our guide had to lower us down on a rope coz the hole wasn't big enough for abseiling. To get out of the caves we had to do some climbing but I was up those sections faster than a monkey up a tree. All in all, I really enjoyed my caving experience especially the chocolate fish we were fed just before leaving the caves. I had two, which I thought I deserved!! The worst part of the whole thing was climbing back up the hill towards the shower block with heavy legs and welly's full of muddy water!!
Once back in Waitomo, we just about had time to grab some food before Morrie had us back on the bus and heading for Roto Vegas. You can smell Rotorua before you see it, that lovely rotton egg smell!! First stop was the Zorb. Danielle and I jumped into a Zorb full of warm water and rolled down a hill before we were taken to our hostel for the night. Seeing as the majority of our group were in the same hostel, we ordered a load of pizzas and had another group dinner before heading in the direction of the hostel bar.
