After leaving Marahau we headed down the West Coast towards Barrytown which was our stop for the night. On route we made a stop at Punakaiki to look at the Pancake rocks. Seeing as it was raining quite heavily and I didn't have on my waterproof I did the walk in extra quick time then went and sat in the cafe to warm up again!
Amy (see photo) had been on the bus ahead of mine but had decided to stay in Barrytown (very brave of her, there is not a great deal to do there) for an extra two days, a) so she could make a knife and b) so she could wait for me to catch up. Now Barrytown is known as one of Stray's major party nights on the South Island circuit. We basically stay at the local pub in a fairly small community. Seeing as there really isn't much to do there, backpackers tend to get very drunk whilst wearing fancy dress. There are a number of boxs of clothes in the bar from which to choose your costume. Needless to say that soon after checking in and dumping my various pieces of luggage, I was first into the fancy dress boxes!! Dinner that evening was a BBQ and soon afterwards I dragged Amy, Lucy and Heather off to put on the costumes we had chosen for the evening. I had decided to go as Captain Crash, pirate king mainly because I had been carrying round the pirate hat I was given in Taupo by Christa, the night we went to see Pirates 3 at the movies. Well to cut a long story short, not many people bothered to get dressed up/drink or really join in the fun. It was possibley the quietest Stray crowd to stay in Barrytown. I was very disappointed after hearing all the Barrytown stories from some of the drivers!!! I did however find a few tubes of face paint so Amy and I amused ourselves by getting covered in the stuff and by writing on the chalkboard in the girls toilets (I have since heard from one or two Stray drivers that my comments are still there as they have gone into the toilets to read them).
