Sunday
So Saturday night got more interesting where we left off. The gang from the hostel were partying in their caravan, so the hostel cat came and sought refuge in our room. He snuggled on the bed with us all evening. He is the nicest cat with the silkiest fur and is pretty huge. He mainly laid on Hannah's legs. Then in the night, when he wanted to get up and go out, he came and purred in Nik's ear and went under the duvet to wake him up and let him out. So cute. Since he went out we have missed him and need a pet.
A further development was that after a week or so here, we finally got our tv to work, so we watched some rubbish on there and that passed the time for sure. Also in news, we found out that our hostel used to be a licensed w**** house before it became a backpackers. Interesting. (almost a cue for Hannah to have a Dolly Parton moment I'd say)
Today, we had a super lazy day drinking tea in bed and watching tv, including a brilliant show about the Homeless World Cup (street soccer) which was in Melbourne apparently. It's good having the tv to watch and waste time with, but as only one channel works well, we keep seeing the same adverts on loop. There are a few amusing ones though. One is for a clearance rug shop where you can buy a 'picture rug' for three dollars - if you want a 1980s icon on your floor that is. Also a shop that sells pots, like flowerpots, but also sells 'memorabilia' which apparently includes a ceramic Freddie Krueger. However, our favourite of all the adverts is for hair transplants. It's pretty normal and boring and then the man says "this was me before" and his photo comes up and yes, he has a little less hair, but you would be hard pushed to notice this due to the slack jawed monged out expression he has on his face which pretty much has us in stitches every time.
Hannah eventually got up and did some packing while Nik laid comatose for some time. Then while Nik got his act together, Hannah went and did a disastrous food shopping trip where they didn't have anything she wanted to buy and everything and everyone that could get in her way and delay her did. When she got back Nik was worried that he may have died. But seriously, trying to get Atkins friendly snacks for our 11 hour coach ride - not easy.
Had a fry up for dinner and commenced packing. Watched some tv inc a funny game show where Nik made a classic comment: "that woman looks Australian. She looks like that other famous Australian woman, you know who I mean" Hannah: "Actually I don't" Nik: "You know the one that's really famous and quite old. She did something with organics. Germaine Greer" Hannah: "You mean feminist Germaine Greer" Nik: "Oh yeah, not organics, feminism".
Also watched the Goonies and The Devil Wears Prada (highbrow) before bed as it's an early start tomorrow. Sigh. Have enjoyed Melbourne though, and really looking forward to getting on the move again.
