Simpson Desert Day 2, Monday 25th July.
Cold night, but beautiful clear blue sky in the morning. We got up, Amity went out and checked out the dingo prints around the campsite while I cooked us a hot breakfast.
First order of the day was to cross Eyre Creek, which was about 100m of water which rose half way up our doors. I did not expect to need a snorkel for the crossing of the Simpson Desert!!!!!
About 4pm after 141kms for the day we got to Poeppel Corner, the intersection of NT, SA & QLD borders. There is 23km detour around Lake Poeppel as the lake has not yet dried enough to drive across. Chris and I were feeling pioneering and decided to be the first to cross by car!!
After walking a course of what looked like a firm path Chris gave it a shot. The photo is of the result of our desire to be the first to drive across the lake this season!!! After double line winch and 45mins the Discovery was free and we were ready to make camp. We would drive the detour in the morning!!!
As soon as the sun went down, out came the rats and mice. They were not gross looking rats but rather bush rats that were not afraid of people!
