Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
We spent 3 hours this morning on our sea lion and dolphin snorkel tour...and it was AWESOME! We were the only ones on the boat (they can take 14 people) and the service from all the staff was great. The skipper and snorkel assistant Jason were great with the kids and made a big effort to ensure the kids didn't prevent Matt and myself from making the most of the experience by looking after the kids while we were out snorkelling. Jason even towed Zach around in the water and helped him interact with the sea lions for a short time until Zach was over the cold water. For Matt and myself, it was very comfortable once we were in as we had full length wetsuits that kept us warm. The sea lions were so friendly and interactive. The water was crystal clear and wasn’t very deep so we could stand if we need to in most places. They weren’t afraid to get up close and as Matt did flips and turns and they really engaged with us.
We had so much time with them before we moved on to the dolphins. They generally find the dolphins near the breakwater, so as soon as we see them, we jump in with Jason who has a Shark Shield on and the skipper of the boat circles nearby. The water wasn’t as clear here but it was great. There were about a dozen dolphins all happy to swim around near us. We also saw some jump out of the water up close.
All up this was a very memorable experience and definitely value for money. These guys at Baird Bay were 25% cheaper than the big guys at Port Lincoln and they didn’t charge for the boys and the service was still A+.
We did the Tahlia Caves Drive which takes you to The Woolshed and The Tub. The Woolshed, I would describe as "Heaven and Hell". It was a really beautiful spot with the most flies we have ever experienced...not a good place to try to have lunch as we did. It was even worse than the flies at Murphy’s Haystacks, just being at the centre of a swarm of flies again.
We then did the Elliston Clifftop Drive which has nice views over the ocean but also has sculptures along the way that make it more interesting.
We pulled up to our camp at Cummings Monument. It was a nice clifftop spot that have a different feel to the cliffs in WA. (less rugged I suppose) however once again a large volume of flies. We were the only ones there.
