Today the weather was poor when we woke so we started the day in the gym. After that we decide to take part in one of the free activities provided, river Kayaking. The river ran down one side of the resort and inland. We met the instructor Nathan who gave us life jackets and paddles and we headed down to the jetty. The Kayaks were for sea and had two people in each. Nicole and I in one and Shaun and Nathan took the other. The boys Kayak moved faster than ours as Nicole had a few problems getting the hang of twisting the paddle when switching sides. I got the full force of this in the face as I saw sat behind her and getting wetter by the minute. We paddled along the river as it wound its way through the mangrove, past resorts and homes. Fishermen on the banks waved as we passed and shouted a greeting of “Bula”. The river banks looked like a real rainforest and Nathan told us that it had been used for the filming of the film Anaconda 2. The film was meant to be set in south America but Fiji has no malaria, crocodiles, and defiantly no Anacondas. We saw flying fish and I spotted what later turned out to be a Mongoose, but they were both very quick and hard to spot. The paddling was quite hard after the gym for all of us but we all enjoyed it.
Next up was a tour of the local shops for supplies. These consisted of cereal, milk, bread, peanut butter, jam, beer, UFO crisps (burger flavour) and instant noodles. These where necessary to cut down the amount of money we spent in the hotel. Outside the shop was a reasonably priced pizza restaurant so we ordered a veg pizza with pineapple (at Nicole’s request).
Then it belted down with rain so we went back to the resort, very carefully as it was pitch black, the kind you never get in England, no street light no house lights nothing!
