The day started with a 06.00 wake up call (well it should have been - they actually woke us at 05.50.....)
We were ready for the off at 7.30, a quick group warm up (or public humiliation as it seems to be) and we set off.
Today was a shorter day, just 58kms and the terrain was much less hilly. We cycled a short first section to a beautiful view point into the Rift Valley.
The second section started with an amazing downhill about 5kms long. The road surface was pretty good so a few of us went full speed down the hill. My Garmin tells me that I averaged 41mph down the hill - it was exhilarating!
That was followed by a 4km uphill which wasn't quite so enjoyable, but will have been great practice for tomorrow and 'The Big Hill'.
We stopped for drinks (and crossed the Equator again) and all stood entranced while 'Professor Peter' showed us how water went clockwise or anticlockwise depending on whether you were north or south of the Equator......
Then it started raining...... Not just a shower, but a downpour of biblical proportions! We cycled section 3 in horrendous rain, getting absolutely soaked. Shoes, socks, shorts, gloves all dripping wet. Because of the weather the final drinks stop was abandoned and we pushed on through to the end of today's ride and lunch.
The final section was completed in record time - I was part of a breakaway group of 4 who decided to get our heads downs and finish as quickly as possible.
At lunch we were greeted with hot soup which given the fact we were all drenched and cold was most welcome.
After lunch it all got a bit surreal - it was decided the we all needed to change into warm clothes before heading to the hotel. All the bags were offloaded from the buses and 70 women proceeded to get changed at the side of a busy road.... I'm not sure that Kenya is really ready for Cycle Kenya......
