On one of our days off from work we decided to take boat trip to Williamstown. It's a nearby town further into Port Philip Bay, and in fact the first place where settlers were based. Then later they worked further up the river in Melbourne. Anyway, it's a really nice small town with a good beach and nice gardens (see the photos.) It's also got some very trendy bars and restaurants. Being the cheap travellers, we decided to go for Fish 'n' Chips instead. It was lovely, as all the food has been, due to the freshness of all the seafood here. Did also manage to have an ice-cream from one of the famously big Gelato shops here.
The boat trip back was good fun. We were the youngest people on the boat by about 40 years and the old people on there with us seemed to be obsessed with attracting massive birds by chucking bread everywhere. It was a good trip though, through the old docking area and shipping yards (Grandad, you would have liked it!) and let us see parts of Melbourne that we wouldn't have otherwise. We went right through the city on the river Yarra, past the recently developed docklands area and the very plush South Bank.
On the South Bank is a complex called the 'Crown'. It's basically a massive Casino, but with bars, nightclubs, cinemas etc etc as well. Amazing place, and thriving at all times of the day. We'll definitely have to make a visit back here at some point for a night.
River Trip - DONE!
