Now for our second last week on Gili Trawangan. This marks week six on the island, how time flies!
Sunday saw Nick having a day off, his first time in 3 weeks. We went out for a meal to celebrate a friends birthday and once that was over the rest of the evening was spent skyping with family!
On the diving front, Helen did a night dive which was amazing, full of spanish dancers, octopus, baby cuttlefish (so cute and one of them got really angry when she shined her torch on him!).
Helen FINALLY did her tired diver tow, only it wasn't the 100m it was meant to be but 200m! The current took her all the way down the island and it was really hard to swim back to land but she got the points she needed!! That's the last of the timed exercises of the DM training!
As part of Project Aware, Shout out for Sharks the dive centre showed a film 'Sharkwater' which was extremely saddening. Helen had her hands over her mouth throughout the entire film as it was all about shark finning, and how successful the shark killing industry is. (please sign the petition!)
Both of us had some amazing dives on Wednesday and Thursday as it was just after full moon, we saw loads of juvenile batfish, juvenile angelfish (so cute), sharks, bumphead parrotfish, morays hunting...you name it we had it!
Friday the 13th marked our equipment exchange, we had to exchange our equipment in extreme conditions. Both of us had to share one regulator whilst having our masks removed, regulator snatched from us, our instructor had a tank beneath us (open) so it was like a volcanic jacuzzi, lots of air bubbles and everything was getting displaced, they even attached a SMB to our tanks, inflated our BCD's etc, they tried everything they could to force us to the surface. We also had an audience snorkelling around us...but we came away successful!
In the evening we had to endure our much feared Snorkel Test, the unofficial final Divemaster test after a lovely meal with 30 others. We were forced to dress up as Sharks as part of Project Aware month (Thankfully, it was nothing worse!). We both downed a litre of alcohol down a snorkel (while wearing a mask!). Nick managed to get it all down but Helen spilt some as her snorkel tilted back. The rest of the night was full of Vodka Joss's and both of us were worse for the wear. The next morning, both of us were very hungover and feeling very fragile but we woke with a smile knowing we were officially Divemasters.
We had to return to the Irish to watch Everton Vs Liverpool, (brought back memories of the night before......) and we were not best pleased with the result. Somebody jinxed the game, you know who you are! But, Helen was pretty pleased with her £100+ win on the Grand national!
The biggest decision we have made this week is that we are not going to Komodo as its off season and theres not many diving liveaboards at the moment. So we will extend our stay on Gili Trawangan by a week and then head to Lembongan to dive with Manta Rays instead. After that we will go back to Bali to chill on the beach and deal with our scuba diving withdrawal symptoms before flying to Australia.
No of Cockroaches killed - 1 (and it was bloomin' massive)
