Well, Goa was lovely. The place we were staying was fantastic, a real bargain. The rooms were cleaned everyday and we even got fresh towels and sheets! The grounds were a bit of a maze with palm trees (coconuts etc) and although we never made it in, the pool was nice, although it was covered by the trees and had a huge net slung between them to catch any heavy fruit that may fall while in bathing!!
It was quite western, obviously catering for the package holidays that go there. It was quite strange seeing people on the beach and in the bars, that have come for a two week holiday. Brits abroad are brits abroad, no matter where they are! The beach was long with beautiful scenery, although the sand was rough and stained our feet orange!! The beach huts and shacks were starting to be built up now, as the monsoons lasted longer than normal this year. It's amazing to see how quickly they can build these, and how much effort goes into them. It was really nice sitting on the beach for the sunset and having a cold Kingfisher beer, watching the fishing boats coming in and listening to some music from the shacks. That said, the 'pester power' from local stalls and taxi drivers was still constant, just desperate to get your money - they don't seem to grasp the idea that we have legs and are quite capable of walking 100m without the need for transport!!!
Nothing of great interest to report from Goa as we just chilled out, read a book, had some beer, had some food, sat on the beach, had more food, had more beer, had a sleep in the sun, had more beer!!! Do you see the theme?!?!? However, my highlight must have been Andi's attempt to get a Goa football shirt. I think we must have been to every stall in Goa looking for the right design, in the right colour and the right size and of course for the cheapest price (yorkshire man you know!!). Most stalls said they had another shop round the corner and they'd send someone to fetch a selection, none of which suited. But after doing this a while, I joked that it will have been the same batch of shirts that would have been moved from shop to shop....and alas that is exactly what happened! Idiot! But in the end he found an Indian football shirt so all the people who had chased around all week and finally got a Goa one in for him, where bitterly disappointed when he didn't by it from them!
So we're on the move again, heading further south to see what that brings. But all in all, the last 5 days in Goa have been good. Great food. The fish curries are out of this world. Fish caught fresh in the sea and cooked in front of you. Still off the meat though, but actually not missing it - the veg options are so tasty you hardly notice the meat is missing! Favourite food so far. But Kerala state has a different background as well, so we'll obviously have to sample some local dishes there too!
