Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up early and met Sarah (Swiss), Greg and the Swedish sisters. Greg had already booked us a rental car. We were given a heap of s#it! The worst car I've ever seen on the road! It was a white apollo and in a terrible condition. The steering wheel was not even aligned properly! I was the only person who could drive, so I had to drive us to Nimbin. We stopped at Clunes for breakfast at a little shop.
We then drove towards Nimbin passing through rolling countryside and sugar cane plantations.
We arrived in Nimbin in the afternoon and as we walked along the main street with the hippy shops etc there was a more sinister side as we were pounced on by dealers: "want weed mate?" "you want LSD?". There were some dodgy characters floating around. We walked into a few hemp shops and hippy shops. We visited the Hemp Embassy which is fighting for more relaxed cannabis laws. We spoke to the leader, Chicken George who welcomed us to Nimbin and gave us free posters and leaflets.
We then drove to Tuntable Falls, it was single track dirt roads and Ebba asked to have a shot of driving. So she drove us along a short stretch of track when suddenly there was a horrible burning smell and smoke started belching out from the wheels. Greg decided it must be worn brake pads that are skimming the wheels. However Ebba thought it was her fault. We walked towards the falls but there was a huge sign stating "NO PUBLIC ACCESS TO FALLS".
So I drove us further north after the car had cooled down, we stopped at Mount Warning and walked through a stretch of rainforest. We were driving down the hill when again the smoke started rising from the wheels. We stopped at a friendly mechanics and asked his advice. He said brake pads were worn and touching the wheels slightly also the brake thing had changed shape causing the shuddery brakes when braking. He said it was ok to continue driving though.
We drove to Tweed Heads, a holiday resort in the north and parked the car next to the ghastly Captain Cook Memorial (1970's style cream monument). We could the see the unsightly towers of Surfers Paradise from the beach viewing point.
We then drove south to Lennox Head and went for a swim in Lake Ainsworth (a freshwater lake stained dark brown by tea trees around the lake). We had a swim in the lake and then returned to the hostel. We got changed and joined everyone else in the hostel for the sangria night. I just had the BBQ (sangria gives me horrible hangovers).
We had a few drinks in the hostel bar and went to bed at 1am.
