We hopped on the bus in Darwin and started on the 8 hour journey to Kununurra - or so we thought - yet again we'd missed the time difference and crossing into Western Australia the clocks went back 1.5 hours so the journey was 9.5 hours!! But we made it in one piece and were picked up at the roadhouse and taken to the hostel. Now were getting used to dodgy hostels this one didn't seem so bad apart from the shower that only had a curtain between you and the rest of the bathroom! We dumped our bags and went for a quick beer at the local pub (which looked more like a motorway service station) and went back to have some dinner (not as easy as we thought as they don't provide plates or knives & forks so we had to cook our pasta and eat it out of the pan with one fork we borrowed! quite romantic really!) and an early night as we were being picked up at 6am!
A bit blury eyed we waited outside the hostel and the bus arrived just after 6am. The group was a mix of two other people who had joined the trip that day too and 3 people who'd been together for the previous 8 days from Broome. We made ourself as comfy as possible for the 6 hour trip into the heart of the Bungles. We passed the Carr Boyd ranges on the way before stopping at Turkey Creek for a pie! After about another hour we left the tarmac road and and went on the bumpy dirt track through the Osmand ranges into the national park and set up camp. We didn't have the same luxury as Fraser Island, this was proper camping in tents you have to put up yourself but we did have a long drop toliet which was a bonus (better than the bush toliet!!).
After lunch we headed into the Bungles and walked through Echidna Chasm. The colours are so beautiful, the sky is so blue and the rocks are such a deep red. Stunning! We then hopped back on the bus to go to the look out to watch the sunset - fab! Then it was back to camp for a mince curry - very bizarre but we were starving! We sat around the fire for an hour and then headed to bed about 9pm!
The next morning we were up at 5:30am and after a quick breakfast we were back on the bus and the first part of the day was the helicopter flight. WOW WOW WOW! The helicopter had no doors so we had the most amazing views in the early morning sunshine. What an experience, you really can't appreciate the Bungles unless you see them from the air. After our 18 minute trip we then went to explore Piccaninny Creek and Catherdral Gorge. Both are on the opposite side of the range to Echidna Chasm and very different. We saw the beehives that we'd expected and Catherdral Gorge was just something else. After lunch it was time to head back to Kununurra. We only had 24 hours in the Bungles after all the travelling and it was the most expensive trip we've been on but it was so worth it - what an experience.
We got back to Kununurra and had a quick shower and then headed back to the Pub/Service Station and had a bite to eat and a few beers. We had planned an early night but we got chatting to the bar staff and ended up staying! We made it back about 12 and fell into bed - bliss!
We didn't have to get up until 9am the next day, checked out at 10am and then hung around the hostel until it was time to catch the bus - only 6.5 hours until we arrive in Katherine.
