We were so sorry to leave Tasmania but really looking forward to getting to Adelaide! Another short flight and we were in Adelaide by lunchtime. On the shuttle bus in no time and checked into our hostel. It was quite a funky place and very friendly but we thought that they were so relaxed they kept forgetting to clean it which was a real shame but the room was fine so we dropped off the bags and walked next door to the pub and had lunch, a few beers and read the papers. After such a stressful day we had a bit of a siesta and went down stairs for our free dinner - Tom Yum Soup - not quite like the one in Melbourne market - it was more like Tom Yuck Soup!! but it was free and the beers were cheap so ate and had a drink and then watched the Wedding Singer before bed!
The next day we'd arranged to meet Hans for lunch so got up and had a walk around town and arrived at the Exeter for 12:30. It was so great to see Hans and we had a fab afternoon, great food and lots of Coopers! Before we realised it was 5:30 and Hans had to get home so we arranged to meet when we got back from Al & Debbie's and then ventured off to the Grace Emily to watch a live band. What a great Sunday!
The following day we picked up the car (and got an upgrade again!) and went to get our bags from the hostel before making our way to Port Germain. The journey is only about 260km but it took over three hours as we had to stop when the hail storms were so bad we couldn't see! But we made it to Port Germain and it didn't take long to find Al & Debbie's. We were greeted by Al waving us in from the road! We had a cuppa and brought our stuff in and then Al treated us to some of his homebrew's - very professional - it was like having a pub in the garage! Deb got home about 6pm and we had a goat curry for dinner - really tasty. After a few more beers/wine and lots of catching up we headed to bed.
Deb was out to work early but Al was off all week so he took us out for the day to Port Augusta (with a detour to Big W - great shop and we found Skip Bo!) and then out to the middle of nowhere on the Stuart Highway to really appreciate how vast this country is - mind blowing! and then back down through Stirling North to Quorn for Lunch in a lovely tea shop (the pub stops serving food at 1.30pm!). We then went up to Melrose and back down through Germain Gorge before getting home about 4pm. Great day - thanks tour guide Al!! We had a cracking dinner, Steaks on the BBQ and yummy salads and potatoes. Fab.
The next day we chilled out in the morning and then went into Port Pirie to see Deb at work and pick up some food for dinner. After shopping and a quick look around K-Mart we went back and made a Fish Pie for tea (Jamie's recipe) and a Beef Stew for the following day. It was very relaxing being in the kitchen and doing normal cooking! Another great evening and we watched a bit of television before going to bed as we planned to be up early the next day.
We managed to get up and out by 7:45am (a real struggle getting out of that comfy bed!) and made our way to Wilpena Pound. We made a few stops on the way at lookout points and made it to Wilpena before lunch. So we headed out on a walk for about 2 hours along the creek and up to the lookout. It's really very stunning but the weather wasn't great and it was a bit misty but it was still a great walk. We had some lunch at the resort and then made our way back. We got back and had beef stew and dumplings and then some great cheese and pates. We were joined by Al & Deb's neighbour Patrick and his friend Joel and it made for a very entertaining evening!
The following day we were up and out by 9am (ish) and headed down to Clare Valley to do some wine tasting. It's a really sweet place and there are so many vineyards! We went to Claymore, Crabtree, Penna Lane, Leasingham and Knapstein - oh and had some lunch in between! We bought quite a few bottles to keep us going and some beers for Al too. A another fab day and then back to PG for dinner - Steak Pie and Mash and Sticky date Pudding for dessert (Al & Debbie really looked after us - home from home!)
Saturday was our last day in PG and we had a bit aof a lie in then Debbie did us a great cooked breakfast and we were introduced to Fried Fritz! Then went for a drive in the Nikki! It's like a lawnmower but it takes passengers although it's much cuter. After a spin around town and a few km's on the highway - very scary - we got back and recovered before taking a walk on the Jetty. It was so windy it wasn't much effort to walk out there but it was like walking through treacle on the way back! Then it was time to head back to Adelaide. We said our goodbyes and set off for a much easier return journey. We checked to our apartment (last minute deal on the web only 10 pounds more than a hostel!) and had some dinner and then bed.
Our last few days in Adelaide were great. We met with Hans and his Girlfriend Chiara (she's so lovely!) on the Sunday for lunch, went to the markets on Monday for lunch with Hans and had Vietnamese soup which was superb (can't wait to try it in Vietnam!) and had an Austral Burger on the Tuesday (a must when you're in Adelaide!) before meeting up with Hans & Chiara to say our goodbyes. Wednesday was our last day so we got to the airport for 10am and by 1pm we'd be in Perth, the last leg of our Oz adventure!
