After a damp few days in Brisbane we finally dried out and set out on our journey up the East Coast to Hervey Bay which was the pick up for our trip to Fraser Island. The coach trip didn't go as smoothly as it could have done - the first bus had broken air con so we had to change buses in Noosa and then to try a make up time we changed buses again at Matilda but we actually ended up getting in earlier than we sould have done. The Hostel bus picked us up from the station and we checked in and dumped our bags. The hostel did great meals for 5 pounds so we had a bite to eat there and headed to bed as we had an early start the next day.
After sorting out our bags and putting most of it into storage we had time for a cup of tea and then we were picked up by our tour guide Kirk (more fondly know as Captain!) and jumped on the bus for the ferry. We met Kate & Kate on the bus who were also on the trip and we should have had 2 more but they had to cancel so it ended up just being the four of us so Kirk changed the big bus for a Land Cruiser and we were on our way.
The crossing over to the Island took about an hour and by the time we landed at Moon Point the clouds had parted. As the other tours headed of in their big buses we sped off and started our tour of the Island. The first day included lots of great info from the Captain on the history and flora and fauna of the Island. We walked through Yidney Scrub Rainforest, had lunch by Ocean Lake, walked along from Orchid Beach to Waddy Point and then went for a swim in Champagne Pools! To end the day we walked up to Indian Head to watch the sun go down and then headed back to our camp for a BBQ. The camp was fantastic - it's not really camping when you've got a king size bed and fluffy white bedding! We had our dinner and then played a bit of Triv before heading to bed.
After Breakfast at 6:30 we were ready to set off. We started the day at Lake Birrybean for a swim, it's just as beautiful as Lake Mackenzie but hardly anyone goes there so we had it to ourselves - amazing. We went for a walk through the rainforest at Central Station and then had lunch by McKenzie Jetty and went up to the site of the Commando School - very cool. Then it was time to head back to camp for another great meal and a few drinkies before bed.
Another early start and we covered so much on our final day, we saw the turtles at Lake Allom, went to the Coloured Sands and the Maheno Shipwreck, walked down through the crystal waters of Eli Creek, went to two sandblows and Lake Wabby and chilled at the shores of Lake Garawongera. This was broken up by lunch at the Wilderness Bar & Bistro - yummy pizza! Then it was time to head back to Hervey Bay.
We said goodbye to Kate & Kate and the Captain and checked back into the hostel, had a bite to eat and then another early night as we had to catch the 8am bus the next day.
