Woo Hoo! Wellington is fab - we could live here (only joking!). We arrived in Wellington after a very easy drive to drop the rental car off and then got a taxi into town and booked into the hostel. The hostel's in a great spot, only a few mins walk from everywhere it seems, Wellington is only 2 km across! We headed down to the wharf and had a wander around and a couple of beers at the Mac's Micro Brewery - very nice. We then headed up to Cuba Street where all the cool shops and bars are and found our self in the best bar we've found so far - the Southern Cross - live music, cold beer and sunshine - what a mix. After several beverages we went back to the hostel (via the supermarket) and had a great prawn stir fry and decided we were probably ready for bed...until we headed outside and met up with a great guy called nick and two lovely girls (both 19!) called Megan and Katlin - we ended up heading back into town as Nick thought there was a rally going on in town but we couldn't find it so we escorted them to the Southern Cross and left there about 1am. We walked (mmm - well more like stumbled) back to the hostel and had a cup of tea - how old are we - really hope that there weren't any CCTV camera's watching us - most of the tea ended up on the carpet!!!
The next day was spent recovering and we finally made it out of bed at about 2pm - we're getting too old for late nights out - and we went for .. you've guessed it .... a beer and then went to Te Papa which is the National Museum. It was fab, a cross between the Science Museum and the British Musuem - four floors of different exhibits which kept us entertained for a couple of hours. We went back to the hostel afterwards and had another stirfry but then had an earlyish night.
Our final full day in Wellington was a bit more succesful and after making our pack up we went to the City Gallery - very cultured - it was mostly contemporary art and had some amazing pieces. We then caught the tram to the Botanic Gardens. We spent a couple of hours there and made our way back to the city through the gardens. We stopped on the way at another couple of great pubs and we bumped into a couple that were on our wine tour in Napier - spooky - so we had a couple of drinks with them which was great. We then headed back to the hostel for tea and yes, you've guessed it, ended up out on the town again! but this time we didn't get back until nearly 4am and we had to check out at 10am - we've never packed and got ready so quickly! We hopped on the shuttle bus to the airport and checked in for our flight to Christchurch (only 24 pounds each!).
