We woke up at 4.30am, after a good nights sleep and quickly got ready, so that we could catch the first bus and try and see the sunrise. After a quick breakfast of bread, butter and jam, we headed to the bus stop. There was a queue but not too long do we decided to take the bus and not walk.
We managed to get on the 4th bus and made our way up the whindy road to Machu Pichu. We arrived just after 6am and made our way to the guard house which would give us the best view when the sun came over the mountain. It was only a short walk but the incline made it tough and we were out of breath when we got to the top. It made me glad I didn't do the trail as I think it would have been really hard work.
The scenery and the view was stunning. It was definitely worth getting up for and beating the crowds meant we got some excellent shots and could enjoy the view in peace. It was a cloudy day so we didnt get to see the sunrise but we enjoyed it none the less.
We then headed back out of the main gate and met our guide who then spent two and a half hours guiding us around the site and providing some history. It was quite interesting to see how good the Inkas were with astrology and the calendar. It was a shame the Spanish destroyed all the literature and we don't know more about how they lived.
At the end of the tour we found ourselves at the base of Waynapicchu, the big mountain behind the city. There was a trail which you could hike that would take about an hour and get you to the top. Only 400 people could do this a day and we decided to do it and queued up but upon reaching the front found that we had the wrong ticket. This was annoying but Shivani didn't really mind as it was a steep climb and would have been challenging, especially as it was raining on and off.
We decided to leave the site as it was getting busy and had seen all the main parts. There were a few other trails we could have done but we decided we would walk back down the mountain to Aguas Calientas.
This took us over an hour and took us through the jungle descending about 1000m. We found this quite tiring and were glad we didn't try it the other way as the people we passed looked really tired and sweaty.
On getting back to the city we headed for a restaurant that had some comfy sofas. We dropped into them and ordered some waters to quench our thirst from having walked down in the sun. It was only 1pm but we felt we had done so much. We decided that we would chill out for the afternoon while we waited for the train. We ended up sitting in the place slowly grazing on some food and drinks for 5 hours.
However at the end Shivani started to feel sick. She had a headache but then her stomach felt funny too. She ended up throwing up. I was really worried but there wasn't anything I could do. We had to head to the train station to get our train. There Shivani threw up again but then she took some coca tea and a coca sweet from Luka and started to feel better.
On the way back we had a good chat with Luka and Valentina. When we got to Ollaytayambo we were met by our driver who would take us back to Cuzco. It was now 9pm and we were feeling tired and I was dozing in the car. The ride took ages and we went down some unlit and dodgy towns. I was kind of worried but we made it to Cuzco and headed to our hostel. We got assigned a different room which was much nicer and quieter too. We were both knackered and went straight to bed.
