After a good nights sleep we got up and had a breakfast of bread, butter, and jam with coffee. Having done some research we decided it would be good to stay in Lima an extra night and fly to Cuzco rather than take the long bus journey. This also meant missing out Nacsa but we thought it was worth the sacrifice.
For today we decided to go to central Lima to see the sights. There was the changing of the guard at 11.45am and a free walking tour at 12.30pm. We left the hotel at 11am with Ellie and Luke who we had met at the hostel and had actually flown on the same flight as us. We thought we had left in good time but the taxi ride took ages due to traffic and we only just got to the palace in time to see the end of the changing of the guards.
After that we took a walking tour where we were told about the history of Lima and the Inka and Spanish conflicts, which was quite a dark and sad story. It was an interesting tour that lasted a couple of hours. After that we went to a restaurant recommend by the guide which was really good. It had excellent juices and I had my first taste of ceviche, the national dish of Peru, which was delicious. After a heavy lunch we decided to walk back to the hostel, which ended up taking two hours. It was a long walk where we passed some markets, the famous water fountain and the national football stadium. We also stopped at the supermarket and had our first Inka Kola, a sweet, cream soda that was bright yellow. It outsells coke and the taste grew on me.
Arriving back at the hostel we booked the next leg of our journey, organising our flight and hostel for Cuzco.
