The school didn't need us today due exams so therefore Sara decided to go to the other deaf school where Sandra and Francesca worked. I decided to visit the men's special needs centre with some hearing volunteers so we went left the house at 8.15am to get a bus to Maharagama then other bus to the centre. It was really hot so I was really sweating, I was starting to wish I stayed at home and waited for Sara to come back.
When we were approaching to the centre, I became a bit more nervous due I was only the deaf person and I was worried how the men would react to that. So I told hearing volunteers to don't leave me alone with any men just in case if I had problems.
There was a long path with lots of beautiful trees along, and then I saw a school right next to the centre. I was so surprised as the centre were not really 'locked' so any of them could walk and hurt any of the children so I was a bit worried..then when we approached to the front gate, the men started to coming up to us and asking for high fives. I just followed the hearing volunteers as I didn't know what to expect so when I was lead to a big hall with few tables and so many of the men were so excited. They came into the hall, started to sit down and waited for us to give them piece of paper and pens. They drew so many things.
I approached a man who drew exactly same thing over and over again. It was really creepy, when I tried to encourage him to change the drawing, he only changed the colour so I decided to leave him alone. I then got grabbed by a young teenager, about 18/19 years old asking me to look at his art work so I told him it was so good and gave him a thumb up. He was so overjoyed and told me to put it up on the wall. We then put so many of the art work on the wall.
I was starting to enjoy this, and I felt a connection. I really liked this project so I started drawing to make a conversation, I wrote my name down on a paper and pointed that to me to a man. He then lightened up and wrote his name, and I then drew a smiley face. It really was good to see how happy he was to have a bit of attention. They decided to dance to a song which I decided to stay behind as I had no idea what the song was!
I realised judging too quickly was bad of me, I had nothing to be nervous about! The men I worked with were so harmless and I truly enjoyed my experience here.
The time then flew by so quickly that it was the time for us to go. I was so gutted. So I gave them high fives and left. We then washed our hands throughly as it was so dirty there. They wore stained clothes, probably some urine and they stunk so bad.
But this project..I felt so connected and not forced to help out. I really enjoyed it and I was gutted I wouldn't be coming back any time soon, but I feel bad for hoping I'll have a day cancellation of school so I am able to come here again!!
