Started with day with brekkie in The Haus, the same German style café we ate in last night which is part of the hotel, then headed off into the Adelaide Hills not quite knowing where we were going as we had a few hours to kill before our meeting this afternoon.
Started by taking the Onkaparinga Valley road out of Hahndorf and then turned left up Cudlee Creek Road towards Tea Tree Gully. I just love these names! Cudlee Creek seems aptly named as there is a wildlife park there where you can cuddle a koala. Cudlee Koala Creek! We stopped off at the wildlife park and discovered we had arrived just in time to do the cuddle - the only cuddle of the day as they only do a morning cuddle when the Adelaide temperature goes above 36 degrees - and yes, that is where it was heading today.
I was a bit uncertain at first but what a lovely experience it turned out to be. It was such a docile koala and just continued chewing on a piece of foliage as it gazed into my eyes! Fabulous.
We then spent an hour or so wandering round the park which has lots of wallabies and kangaroos which you can get right up close to - you can buy some biscuits to feed to them but this wasn't for us. Several varieties including lots of albino white wallabies. One wallaby had a baby in its pouch - all you could so of it were the front paws hanging out. Thought I'd taken a picture but unfortunately clicked the wrong button. Ought to wear my glasses more!
Saw two wombats, one white, one brown, a dingo and a croc. The park also had all manner of different birds, including the almost extinct cassowary. We'd have preferred to see all these animals in their natural habitat of course, but the wildlife park was a good way to ensure we actually did see them - and holding a koala was not something we were ever going to do in the wild!
We then drove on through the Adelaide hills. So much work going on to clear a lot of the aftermath of the huge bush fires of just four weeks ago. We drove through endless areas that have been devastated, though in many places the grass shoots are pushing back through because there has been some rain.
And then we found ourselves in the village of Inglewood which is where our appointment was. Stopped for a diet coke in the Inglewood Inn - South Australia's first historic hotel apparently. Build in 1857 by an Adelaide publican called Firman Deacon who saw an opportunity when the North Eastern Road was being constructed out of Adelaide and he recognised the need for a hostelry along the way. The town has grown up around it and the hotel, which was given the name Inglewood by Firman's team of builders who named it after a town in Cumberland, England, has given the town its name instead of vice versa.
Went then to our meeting on the outskirts of Inglewood - good meeting - nice people - agents for Eddie's ear tags. The big fires literally stopped in their doorstep, reaching the other side of the gravel road their business is on before the wind changed direction. Scary.
We then drove on into Adelaide. Decided to go straight to the airport and relinquish our hire car a day early, then taxi into the centre of Adelaide where we are on the 16th floor of the Hilton with views towards the Adelaide Hills from whence we came.
Chinatown is just on our doorstep so we've had a crispy duck dish tonight and we are looking forward to tomorrow to exploring yet another bit of Oz. Night night!
