Robe is definitely a town you could spend more than a night in. Really liked the character of it. Took a drive around the other side of the harbour after checking out of the hotel this morning - our room had faced out onto the park with its open air barbie area and the harbour beyond. A road loops around the headland beyond the harbour. Glorious views of the open ocean. Right at the top are the ruins of the old town gaol and also an obelisk from which rockets were fired to guide ships that were in distress in troubled waters.
Drove then along the road that hugs the coast heading north towards Adelaide. Passed a few vineyards from the Mount Benson wineries, saw a couple of wallabies - alive - and a couple squashed! Unfortunately there were no views of the ocean as there was always either higher land or a mass of vegetation between us and the water. We drove for miles and miles with just open farmland to look out on, then suddenly it changed to the high shrubby vegetation. Not very interesting to be honest. Just a means of getting from A to B.
And then a sign announced we were entering the Coorong National Park. Still nothing much else to see but the shrubs and a few stunted looking trees. Found a loo stop in Salt Creek - a settlement that seemed to comprise only the petrol station with loos and perhaps a couple of houses.
Soon after we began to pick up sightings of some very wide very shallow dried out lakes and eventually the occasional one with some water. And then the scenery began to open up into huge expanses of lagoons to our left, but with a narrow run of dunes known as Younghusband Peninsula beyond, between the lakes and the ocean. Lovely to look out on as we drove through. Apparently important breeding ground for Pelicans and other wildlife but the wrong time of year for us to have seen much of this.
And then we were in the town of Meningie where we had originally planned to spend the night but we needed to plough on to nearer Adelaide because of a business meeting tomorrow. Think we were probably fortunate not to be staying in Meningie as it is less than a one horse town, although we stopped and bought a pie and coffee in the bakery and ate these on a very well kept park area overlooking Lake Albert.
A man kept cracking a long whip to scare away the gulls that were collecting in the park. Honest! That was a first. We had the feeling the people of Meningie are very proud of their town which is described on the community website as having all the charm of a small country town. Lots of information boards about the history of the town which, admittedly, was interesting. All about the indigenous Ngarrindjerri people who lived there but whose lives were changed forever when European Overlanders came along in the middle of the 19th century. Trying to google to remind myself about it all but the wifi in the hotel is the worst we've had so far along our route.
Back in the car we headed into the Adelaide Hills and have checked into a hotel in the town of Hahndorf, whose claim to fame is that it is Austalia's largest German town!!! The town was established by a group of German Lutherans and now boasts a busy and bustling main road through which is lined with gift shops, arty crafty shops, goody shops, all sorts, all with a German theme. There are also German style inns selling German beers and German foods. Fascinating but quite bizarre.
It is now getting hot and sunny. Walked up and down the Main Street a few times and now chilling in the cool of our hotel room before deciding which German Haus to eat in tonight!
While out and about we stopped for a wine tasting in the town centre's Adelaide Hills Wine Centre. As we walked in a good looking young man was walking out. We were greeted by the young assistant in the centre with the question: Does my butt look big in these trousers? And then: Can you see my panty line? Turns out she fancies the young man and these were the thoughts running through her head as we walked in! She looked great and we were able to reassure her!
Tasted 5 wines from the Adelaide Hills vineyards, two whites, a rosé and two reds. All very enjoyable. Then mentioned we had seen a "hand crafted sparkling red" by one of the wine makers whose wine we had just sampled. Quick as a flash we were tasting some of this. Really unusual and very nice.
Back in our room and in the spa when we remembered part of the package we had booed for tonight's room was a bottle of Lois by The Lane. Went over to reception to query this and was immediately given our bottle of sparkling Blanc de Blanc. Enjoyed this them went over to The Haus for a single dish. The special of Wagyu beef schnitzel for Eddie and the petit fillet mignon wrapped in prosciutto for me.
Back to our room at 9.30 and another early night. Nothing wrong with that!

Sally Anne Still loving the blog. We had coffee & pie from that exact same bakery & ate it in the exact same park almost 4 years exactly to the day. Enjoy Adelaide, we loved the market & the Immigration museum xx
