Have to start with breakfast at Oscars, our hotel in Port Fairy. Excellent. And really set us up for the day - two fried eggs, a generous couple of pieces of crispy bacon, mushrooms, incredibly flavoursome tomatoes and a dollop of spinach. The latter didn't seem right as a breakfast accompaniment to start off with, but it was really good. Thank you Sally Anne for the recommendation.
While we were having breakfast a wallaby hopped its way at great speed along the other side of the river. I should also mention the amazing scent from the lavender in the enclosed courtyard at Oscars.
Checked out of the hotel and drove a little way down to the causeway across to Griffiths Island which sits at the mouth of the Moyne River (the river Oscars looks out onto). The island is a nature reserve and breeding ground for shearwater seabirds and also supports a small colony of black wallabies. Most of the island is out of Bounds to visitors because of the birds, but there's a circular walk of around 3km around it which we did, mostly along footpaths but part over the beach and past the Port Fairy lighthouse.
Surprised to see several dead birds along the path edges. A sign explains these have died from exhaustion as they have migrated from Russia - ringed in Russia and found on Griffiths Island. Unfortunately we didn't see any wallabies - best viewing in around dusk but we had to move on.
Leaving Port Fairy the sun had started to shine and we were more appreciative of how quaint Port Fairy is. A sign as you drive in and drive out describes Port Fairy as "the world's most liveable community" which I think is probably exaggerating a tad!
Long drive from Port Fairy across the border from Victoria into South Australia to Mount Gambier. Time has now shifted by half an hour as we are in a different time zone in South Australia - just 10 and a half hours ahead of the UK instead of 11. Saw lots of wallabies along the route. Sadly only one was alive, the others all seen as roadkill. I caught a glimpse of a big round body on thin spindly legs ... An emu!
In Mount Gambier we took a short detour to see the Blue Lake. So worth doing. This is a lake in a volcanic crater which, for three months of the year, is an intense bright cerulean blue. And we are right in the middle of those three months. Truly amazing to see. In a month or so it will turn back to somber grey.
Onwards for another long stretch of road through farmland then closer to the sea and a series of lagoons which are between the road and the open ocean and finally we came into Robe. We are in the Harbour View Motel in a room overlooking the harbour (currently sitting on our balcony having a glass of beer as I write). The sky is now perfect blue. Not a cloud to be seen. But there is a strong wind blowing up from the south which is keeping the air temperature cool. Actual temperature is around 21 degrees.
So we've ended the day needing to talk about food. We were recommended a restaurant in the centre of Robe. What a find. Bit like stumbling across Rick Stein when he was first setting out in Padstow. We had to book a table - walk-ins not really advised. We ordered their southern ocean lobster menu in advance. Wow. Delicious. Good job the hotel is a little way out of the centre of town so we had a walk back!
Robe is a lovely little town. Very historic. Very olde worlde. Just about every building as you walk into town has a plaque giving its history from 150 years ago. This is what I really call quaint. Recommend anyone to come here if they are travelling go between Melbourne and Adelaide.
Missed a wonderful sunset while we were in the restaurant - I could just see a bit of it over the roof tops. Can't have everything.
Now back at the hotel. Slight change of plan for tomorrow as Eddie now has a new business meeting scheduled to the north east of Adelaide on Friday. Cancelled our reservation in Meningie for tomorrow. Now going on to Hahndorf. Will report again tomorrow.

Sally Anne Glad you enjoyed the hotel, we did that lovely walk too! Does your detour mean you are going to miss the World of Cheese? I tried to give you 5stars but it wouldn't let me xx
izzwizz Glad to see how much you are enjoying your trip and fabulous blog entry! It's blooming cold here, but at least we got rid of the snow today. Maddy x
