Leaving our friends in Germany was a little sad, but then we were heading to Innsbruck to see some more friends, also our route would take us over a pass in the Austrian Alps, it was breathtaking. The down side was that the roads were wet, the upside, it wasn't raining on us.
We arrived in Innsbruck on a Monday night and headed straight to a campground our friends had recommended as being close to town with good amenities, the amenities were good and it was close to the city, but the service was very poor and the ground even harder to get pegs into.
Our friends said they would join us for dinner in the campground restaurant, they were unaware it was closed on Mondays, so we proceeded to get an evening tour of the city as we drove from place to place only to find them all closed. We eventually finished up in a packed place that was a beautifully restored pub.
With the threat of rain we made plans for our friend to pick us up in the morning to take us around Innsbruck and up the mountain that dominates over the city.
We were pleased when we woke in the morning to light cloud over the mountains and the sun peaking through.
By the time our friend picked us up and we had stopped for breakfast the sky was clear and the day looked fantastic.
We started with a walk through the old city, on the way crossing a very full Inn River, apparently it had threatened to flood a week earlier.
The old part of the city was beautiful with pedestrian friendly streets after 11 and well preserved old buildings aplenty.
But we were hanging out to catch the funicular and cable car to the top of Nordkette, the 2256m high mountain that dominates over the city.
To get to the top of Nordkette you need to catch three different cable cars to get there. Once at the top, the view was stunning with views over the city and across the surrounding mountains.
Back down in the city we had lunch before spending a couple of hours going through their amazing museum and attached church which has a tomb for Maximilian the first, though he is not in it.
After the museum we headed to the incredible Bergisei Ski Jump where nutters in the name of sport hurtle down this incredibly high, steep slope before launching themselves into the air only to land on an even steeper slope before stopping themselves without leaving the stadium unexpectedly. Mad!
Our friends then took us back to camp to bid us farewell and safe travels, but before they did they gave us some tips on roads to take to get us to Hungary.
The next day we would take these roads, but that will be in the next blog.
