Another early start this morning and another sunrise, this time over the Grand Canyon. Our tour leader took the group down to an enormous rock jutting out of the side of the canyon. It was a fabulous spot however I stayed behind, knowing my dodgy knee wouldn't allow me back up again if I made it down. It worked out for the best though, Katelin kindly bought me a bagal and OJ and I sat alone on a pieceful rock wathcing the rising sun. It was nice to have some time away from the group as we have now been in eachothers company for almost two and a half weeks.
We were given maps and details of trecks you can do in the Canyon, however again, due to my ailments, I decided to go a different route and Joadie offered to keep me company. We did a short two mile bimble along 'the rim' a beautiful route around the edge of the canyon. To walk the whole way round would have been twelve miles which I may have done in cool weather but not August sothern sun! We spent three hours walking the route, stopping for a sit down and a drink periodically and to take in the views. We saw a lot of wildlife too, chipmunks, squirrels, lizards, a humming bird and even some condors which swooped low and then circled high above us.
We stopped at a beautiful look-out point which was a walkway out of the side of the canyon, meaning when you were on it, it felt like you were hovering above the canyon. From where we walked we had a great view of the other trail people had taken. The Bright Angels Trail was a 12 mile round trip down in to the Canyon through the Indian Garden and out to the Pleateu Point and back. Three made it back to camp at 1800 after completing it. The others walked 1.5 miles down and a more strenuous1.5 miles back up and called it a day.
The ones that didn't tackle the twelve miler spent the afternoon enjoying a bit of chillout time. We did some laundry, chatted, wrote our blogs/diaries/scrapbooks, had a beer, painted our horredous looking toe nails and took advantage of wifi, gloating to our facebook friends about how amazing our trip is. Our tour guide cooked a scrummy (and rather massive) pork chop with mashed potatoe and salad for dinner and after a camp fire we fell in to bed, again, totally shattered.
