The day started in Monument Valley by being woken by our Navajo guide at 05:15. I cleaned my teeth behind the hogan with my water bottle and used the drop toilet whilst stared out in to the wilderness. I remember doing the same thing whilst looking out on to the Serengheti. Very surreal. We hopped on to the jeep and were driven to a spot to watch the sunrise. Sleeping under the stars and watching a sunrise over Monument Valley felt pretty special. We were served a breakfast of cereal and fruit and then made our way back to the visitor centre where we attempted a good scrub with baby wipes. We all left with orange feet though!
On our way to the Grand Canyon we stopped at the Navajo Monument. An old ruined settlement originally built by the Hopi. It would have been a 6 hour walk down to it, so we looked at it from the viewing point. (not nearly as good).
During the next leg of our journy, Katelin our tour guide, made us draw a picture of ourselves on a paper bag. (a bit pre-school but it past the time and amused us for an hour or so). We arrived at the Grand Canyon after lunch and put the paper bags over our heads. We stood in a line, each of us with our hands on the shoulders of the person in front and walked slowly for five minutes. Katelin then told us to take off our bags. It was a clever tactic, as one moment we were looking at a car park, the next we were looking down in to the Grand Canyon. The view was incredible and i was more impressed with it than in 95' however it still didn't quite have the wow factor like that of Monument Valley.
We sat on the edge (the bit where your mum always tells you to come away from when your eight) and chatted about our future. Deep!
Next came the reeeeally fun part. A helicopter ride over the Grand canyon. There were 6 seats, so our group was split in half and myself, joadie, Helena and Tara (along with an obnoxious American with his mother) flew in one. The seats were allocated based on weight and finally eating all the pies paid off as I got the best seat in the front on the right, meaning great views!
We flew over tree tops to start with, looking for bears below but didn't see any. The pilot told us to get our cameras ready as we were about to fly over the edge of the canyon. Nothing could have prepared us for that. It was an enormous adrenaline rush. Trees, trees, more trees then a sheer drop of
hundreds of feet. Everyone in the chopper let out a little squeel, but it was fabulous! We had a 45 minute flight over the canyon with the pilot pointing out certain points of interests such as famous rocks, formations, and the Colorado river. We were all rather disappointed when it came to an end, but we had pizza for dinner which promptly cheered us up and then fell in to bed, exhausted!
